A sheriff’s deputy caught stealing Pokemon cards

A sheriff’s deputy in Alabama was caught stealing Pokemon cards from Walmart while still wearing his uniform, and then fled the scene after being confronted by employees of the retail giant. The Oxford police responded to the call and later found the officer at a local restaurant with the stolen cards. He has been arrested and fired from the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office.

According to a report from WVTM13, the unidentified officer stole Pokemon cards from the Oxford Walmart on August 20, while still wearing his sheriff’s office uniform. Employees witnessed the theft and confronted the officer, who then fled the scene. The police later responded to the call and found the officer at a local restaurant, where he was arrested.

“Oxford police officers responded to the Walmart at 305 Grand Boulevard at approximately 7:25 p.m. in reference to a theft in progress,” a statement from the Oxford Police Department read. “While on scene, officers encountered a Calhoun County deputy sheriff who was identified as being involved in the theft.”

The officer has been identified as Josh Hardy, and it is unclear what motive he may have had for the theft. It is also unclear how he expected to get away with the crime, as a sheriff’s deputy in full uniform would certainly be recognised in any store.

This incident comes after a recent theft of $300,000 worth of trading card games from Gen Con 2023. Two thieves stole the cards before the event began, which is one of the largest gaming conventions in the world. They were later caught on CCTV.

The suspects are reportedly board game designers Thomas J. Dunbar and Andrew Pearson Giaume. The police are now seeking the public’s help in identifying the suspects, who may be residents of New York City.

“If you have any information regarding the identity of these suspects, please contact the Gen Con Tip Line at 800-547-9306 (800-547-9306),” the Indianapolis Police Department wrote on Twitter. “You can also send an anonymous tip via the Mobile Police App (https://m.onelink.me/d08b5a70), or by texting ‘INDYPD’ to 274637.”
