Rediscovering the Talking Pikachu Plush

I still have my talking Pikachu plush from the ‘90s. I don’t know if you do, too, but you better check your attic because it looks like it’s an iconic relic for many PC users. In a recent Steam chat, people reminisce about the 1998 plush, expressing excitement and nostalgia. Some users also make unrelated comments, like referencing Ben 10 merchandise or the design of the Pikachu plush.

I’m guilty of not knowing the whereabouts of my own “OG fat Pikachu,” but it looks like many people are still holding onto theirs. Some users even reminisce about their siblings’ or their own childhoods, expressing wistfulness that they moved houses and had to get rid of the plush.

“I still have mine,” one user writes. “It’s in a box in the attic. I’m not sure if it still talks after all these years but I’ll check soon.”

“I used to have one,” another writes. “But I moved and had to throw it out because it took up a lot of room. I still miss it.”

There are some more serious comments, too, with other users who admit that they got rid of the plush when they had to move houses. “I used to have one,” one user writes. “But I threw it out when I moved.”

“I used to have one too,” another writes. “But I threw it out when I moved as well.”

A few users also mention that they still have the plush but store it away somewhere. Still, I think it’s safe to say that the talking Pikachu plush is an iconic relic that many of us would look back on with fondness.

If you’re still unsure about what the talking Pikachu plush is, it’s a 1998 toy that you squeeze and say ‘Pikachu’ to make it repeat the word. You can watch it in action in the video below:

A user also comments that the Pikachu plush is modeled after “the weird red/blue version” of the Pokémon. Another user jokingly argues that the “red/blue version is perfect,” to which another replies, “I’ll pay a million for it.”

Some users, however, express their surprise at rediscovering the existence of this iconic relic. “I just remembered about this,” one writes. “I used to have a talking Pikachu, too.”

“Remembering I had one, too,” another user writes. “I don’t know where mine is now…”

If you ever do come across your talking Pikachu plush, you might notice that its fur is a different colour than usual – a reddish-purple or pink. This stems from the fact that the plush is modeled after the “weird” red/blue version of Pikachu, as mentioned above.

If you’re wondering whether the plush still works after all these years, one user asks, “Is Pikachu okay?” It could be a serious comment, perhaps asking about the plush’s condition or if it still functions. But another user writes, “It’s fine, it’s a millionaire.”

In all seriousness, it looks like the Pikachu plush is a miracle worker, because many users who have owned it still have it. I’m tempted to go and look in my parents’ attic right now…

If you ever see the Pikachu plush in real life, you’ll notice that it’s also quite big. This is because it’s modeled after the mascot’s ‘80s and ‘90s design and is much larger than the Anime and current game counterpart.

There are also a few comments about the “perfect” red/blue Pikachu, too. “I used to have one,” a user writes. “But I got rid of it when I moved. I miss it tho.” Another replies, “I used to have one, too. But I still have it. It’s perfect!”
