Space Marine 2

Space Marine 2 is here, and it looks like it’s going to deliver everything we wanted from a competent sequel to cult shooter Space Marine. The E3 trailer for the Warhammer 40,000 shooter combines elements of Saving Private Ryan, Aliens, and Predator, with the Tyranids drawing inspiration from Geiger’s Xenomorph.

Space Marine 2 launches Captain Titus and his Primarised body into the 41st millennium, where he joins the Astra Militarum in a far-future D-Day scenario. The opening sequence is thrilling – reminiscent of Predator, if Dutch and his gang were firing bolter shells instead of arrows – and sets the tone for what’s to come.

Much like the first game, Space Marine 2 looks to deliver the same intense and visceral combat that made the original so enjoyable. Bolter shells explode on armored carapaces, while the xenos bugs unleash swarms of vicious spores that cover the screen and stab at Titus’s armor.

Players take on the role of Captain Titus, and lead a crack squad of Primaris Space Marines in a gritty and cinematic fight against the alien beasties. Space Marine 2 follows the typical shooter tropes, starting with cannon fodder enemies before introducing bigger and tougher opponents to overcome.

Space Marine 2 does little to shake up the formula, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Ammo resupply and health kits are generously provided, so players can feel confident jumping into the fray and letting loose a hail of bolter fire. Poor positioning and recklessness will still lead to defeat, however – even with the powerful Mark X Power Armour at your disposal.

I’m a big fan of the Warhammer 40,000 universe, and I’m eager to see what other Primaris goodies Relic has lined up. The jungle setting and moments of downtime add to the atmosphere, making you feel like a powerful warrior cutting through foes with a Bolt Rifle and Chainsword.

Space Marine 2 looks to deliver a competent sequel to the original, while keeping Warhammer fans like me engaged. I’m particularly excited to see what the Tyranids have in store – they may have surprises up their chitinous sleeves, such as deploying Neurolictors, Norn Emissaries, or even elite Genestealers.
