A call to pause all AI and superconductor experiments
A parody open letter calling for the cessation of AI and superconductor research is signed by names like Musk, Hawking, and Kurzweil, but is also a call to pause current experiments that use some of the most advanced and powerful technologies known to humankind. The letter is also hosted on a site called FutureofLiff.org, making it easily the most Future of LIfe Institute-themed thing on the internet today.
“We, the undersigned, hereby request the labs currently conducting superconductor research to halt their experiments until a proper planning and management assessment is complete,” the letter begins.
“The labs have clearly demonstrated they cannot be trusted to do such assessments themselves. Therefore we, the undersigned, have decided to provide an assessment for them.”
The letter, signed by over 293K signatories, is a call to pause advanced technology experiments, particularly those involving AI and superconductors. It cites the potential for scientists to be “unleashing materials they can’t comprehend or control” and calls for more caution in the planning and management of the research.
The letter is a parody, signed by names like Elon Musk and Stephen Hawking, and is hosted on FutureofLiff.org, a site that parodies the Future of Life Institute. The FLI is a non-profit group devoted to AI and life science research, and is known for spearheading the letter calling for a ban on lethal autonomous weapons, signed by over 200K people.
