Insomniac Games has a lot of great games under its belt, and many of them are open world. From Spidey’s fantastic Manhattan, to the sprawling Dubai of The Amazing Spider-Man 1 and 2, and the beautiful and varied Marvel’s Spider-Man World Tour, the developer has proven it has the chops to craft a great big world. So, with that in mind, I think it’s time for Insomniac to make an open world predator game.
I’m sure you’re wondering how I got from Spiderman to Predators, and I’ll get there, I promise. Aliens Vs Predator is a game from the early 00s that I played on my PS2 as a teenager. It’s a fun, if flawed multiplayer shooter, but I’d argue that there’s enough room for a single-player-ish remake that’s more in the mould of Isolation.
Some of you may be disappointed that it was a multiplayer game, but I’m sure there’s an audience for an Alien Isolation-style Predator game. Others may recall some fond memories of the game, the cover art, or their first time playing the game as a teenager.
It’s not a new game by any means, but there are still plenty of expansions and packs available, including one that includes Arnold Schwarzenegger’s character from the Predator movies. Some of you may be disinterested in the game, while others share my nostalgia and would love to see a remake.
There are so many different suggestions for what it could be, but one user would love a planet-sized open world with different factions, including aliens, predators, and militias. Another user suggests a singular focused Predator game similar to Assassin’s Creed or Spiderman, with a focus on stealth and exploration. I think Insomniac could absolutely do a great job with this title, and it would be a departure from their usual open world games.
There are also quite a few users who prefer a Predator game over another Spiderman game. Now, I don’t have any ill will toward the friendly neighbourhood web-slinger, but if you’re a fan of Open-world games and you’ve played even one PS2 classic, you’ll know that there’s nothing quite like an Aliens game.
The problem is that the ownership rights are a bit complicated, so I don’t know if we’ll ever see an Aliens game again. Some users recall their fond memories of playing the game as a teenager, and others mention an old Predator game they played on their PS2 and consider getting it for nostalgia’s sake.
One user also compares it to Alien vs. Predator 2, praising the predator sections, while another expresses disappointment that it was a multiplayer game, although they do express an interest in an Isolation game.
There’s some speculation about what Insomniac might do with an open-world game that’s already established, such as adapting their existing sandbox for other franchises, such as TMNT.
Another user asks about securing licenses from Marvel and Sony for a Predator game. I wouldn’t be surprised if securing the rights to the IP was a huge hurdle, although I do wonder if there’s a way around it. I don’t know if an indie studio could make a Predator game without having to pay Fox, or if it would be better off licensing out the IP to a major publisher and letting them do the heavy lifting.
Still, I’d love to see a Bethesda Predator game. One user imagines a Predator game in the style of Fallout 4, and I think that’s a great idea. I’ve seen a lot of suggestions for open-world games, but I think a space game along the lines of No Man’s Sky would also be a fantastic Predator game.
