AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX3D: The Ultimate Gaming CPU
The Ryzen 9 7945HX3D is here, and it’s the first 3D V-Cache CPU for gaming laptops. The chip launches on August 22 in the Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 X3D, and AMD claims it’s a big leap forward in gaming performance. In fact, the company claims the new chip can increase gaming performance by over 15% compared to the current flagship AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX.
We’ve talked about 3D V-Cache before, but here’s the short version. Rather than accessing system memory, the CPU can apply a chunk of its L3 cache to reduce these requests and boost gaming performance. You can read our full explainer on 3D V-Cache here, but the key takeaway is that it’s a nifty solution that’s even more impressive in power-limited mobile devices.
In certain games, AMD claims the benefit of V-Cache can be more than double with a lesser TDP. That’s the big promise of the new Ryzen 9 7945HX3D, and the company says it’s achieved these results by further optimizing the platform.
Naturally, this performance boost comes at a cost, and the Ryzen 9 7945HX3D is a desktop CPU fitted into a laptop chassis. Nonetheless, the chip is a 16-core, 32-thread processor with a boost clock up to 5.4 GHz and 144MB of cache. Unlike other Ryzen chips, however, the TDP is at least 55W, but AMD says that number can go higher.
Asus hasn’t announced the Ryzen 9 7945HX3D’s price and regions of sale yet, but it’s safe to say you’ll pay quite a premium for the new CPU. AMD did also fail to provide any comparisons against Intel CPUs, so we’ll have to wait and see how it stacks up.
