Baldur’s Gate 3 Putrid Bog

Want to know how to get through the Baldur’s Gate 3 Putrid Bog? If you’ve just started a new game, you’ll likely find yourself in this swamp. This area is called the Sunlit Wetlands, or the Putrid Bog, and it’s the first major challenge for our protagonists.

The Putrid Bog or Sunlit Wetlands is a challenging area for the RPG game. A supposed sweet old lady owns a teahouse in the area, but she’s actually a wicked hag who has enchanted the swamp. Her magic traps you, hostile plants, and even the food you eat. Stick to the main pathways to avoid traps, as they are usually found off the beaten path. Likewise, be cautious of plants and food in the swamp, as they are harmful and monitored by the hag. Touching tall bramble bush plants can also cause the Bleeding debuff, which drains your health over time.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Putrid Bog enemies

You’ll most likely encounter the first enemies in the Putrid Bog early on, assuming you are under the hag’s illusion. These are the Redcaps, powerful creatures that can do significant damage. You can choose to pretend they are sheep, or engage with them. They’ll fight back either way.

Once you’re out of the swamp and in the open, you’ll find a tough fight awaits on an island northeast of the wetlands. Here, you’ll face Mephits and Wood Woads. Focus on killing the Mephits that spawn others, and prioritize fire damage against the Wood Woads.

Gandrel, a strange trader near the teahouse, can be dealt with in different ways. You can kill him, which nets you a minor loot reward, but has consequences. You can also give him Astarion, which allows him to escape, but again, has consequences. You can also be vague, which allows for a peaceful outcome.

The pink frog to the east can become hostile if you bother her. It’s best to speak with her to learn about the hag’s illusion spell. She requires the hag to be defeated before she’ll let you pass. Once she does, you can drink from the well outside the teahouse. This grants the Refreshed buff, which is always nice. However, if you plan on facing the hag, it’s best to drink from the well before entering the teahouse, as you’ll face debuffs while inside.

Baldur’s Gate 3 teahouse

Once you enter the teahouse, you’ll face Auntie Ethel. You’ll also have to make some decisions involving Mayrina and the tadpole. When you’re ready, you can make your choices, which will have a small impact on the story.

That’s all you need to know to get through the Baldur’s Gate 3 Putrid Bog. If you’re looking for something a little less swampy, our guide to the Durlag’s Tower area should help to prepare you for the new dungeons and enemies you’ll find there.
