Both Larian Studios’ and FromSoftware’s RPGs have had a lot of success
While the Baldur’s Gate 3 vs Elden Ring debate rages on, both Larian Studios’ and FromSoftware’s RPGs have had a lot of success. Both studios have broadened their audiences significantly, and both games have a lot in common. Ultimately, the process of iteration is the key to both games’ success, as both FromSoftware and Larian Studios have spent decades developing a kind of game, and their efforts have paid off with quality behind-the-scenes and an audience for the games.
FromSoftware and their refined gameplay formula
FromSoftware has been refining its gameplay formula since Demon’s Souls in 2009, exploring new settings and mechanics with each release. From Dark Souls to Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, the Japanese studio has brought new ideas to the table while retaining a consistent core.
Larian Studios and their expertise in isometric RPGs
Larian has been developing isometric RPGs since the early 2000s, honing their skills over time. The studio saw a similar phenomenon with the critical and commercial success of Divinity: Original Sin and its sequel, which led to a larger group of people trying and embracing the critically-beloved sequel.
Both games, Elden Ring and Baldur’s Gate 3, share other similarities as well. They are both challenging, dense, and fantasy RPGs that are single-player-focused with unobtrusive multiplayer components, free from microtransactions. Those factors contribute to their success, but ultimately, the games’ quality is what matters most, and spending decades developing one kind of game is a proven way to ensure its excellence.
