Baldur's Gate 3: No Expansion in Sight
Baldur’s Gate 3 might have made its way to the final stretch of its campaign, but an expansion to take players from level 12 to 20 in Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) is not on the immediate horizon, according to Baldur’s Gate 3 developer Larian.
Founder Swen Vincke says that taking players to those godlike D&D levels would make designing high-level adventures challenging, and that expanding the scope of the PS4 and PC game’s campaign would require significant development effort.
“It might seem like ideal expansion material, but the reality is more complex,” Vincke says. “For one, there would be the potential permutations of a finished Baldur’s Gate 3 campaign feeding into an expansion starting at level 13. We’d also have to take into account the long development lead time. If we were to create such an expansion, we’d have to wait a long time for it.”
Larian's Future Plans
Although Vincke has expressed interest in Larian working on multiple smaller projects after Baldur’s Gate 3 and returning to the Divinity series, the studio has a plan for its future. However, Vincke says it is not ready to share details yet, emphasizing the need for caution in announcing projects before they are ready.
“We do have a plan for the studio’s future,” Vincke says. “But we’re not ready to talk about it yet. We do have a lot of exciting things in the pipeline, and we do plan to announce them. But it will be when we’re ready to announce them. We do have a lot of stuff in our oven, but we’re not ready to tell you about it yet.”
While the potential for fan-made expansions was not discussed in detail, Vincke did mention that mod support for Baldur’s Gate 3 will improve significantly after the release of the PS5 version.
“There will be a lot more people with modding capabilities on PS5,” Vincke says. “As a result, we will see a lot more modders on that platform, and we’re very much looking forward to that.”
