A new Druid subclass in Baldur's Gate 3 allows players to raise an army of fungal zombies straight out of The Last of Us

I’m beyond excited to infest Baldur’s Gate 3 with an army of mushroom zombies straight out of The Last of Us. That’s right – I’m talking about the 2013 game, not the 2018 one. Developer Overhaul Games has revealed the final Druid subclass in the D&D game, and it’s a doozy.

The Circle of Spores brings the number of Druid subclasses available in Baldur’s Gate 3 to four, with the others being the Circle of the Moon, Circle of the Land, and Nature. As the name implies, this Druid subclass allows players to raise an army of fungal zombies straight out of The Last of Us. I’m so down for that.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a Druid subclass with the ability to raise the dead, but it’s certainly one of the most fun and unique takes on the concept. The Circle of Spores already exists in D&D, so it’s not a wholly original addition, but it’s been adapted for the fantasy game.

The highlight here is the ability to infect corpses with spores and raise them as undead mushroom creatures – just like The Last of Us’s clickers. The other spells aren’t too shabby either, with Fungal Infestation reanimating corpses as zombies for one hour. It’s not quite an army, but it’ll do.

The Circle of Spores Druid gains additional Druid spells as it levels up, with Fungal Body protecting the player from blindness, deafness, fear, and poison. I’m not sure if that’s worth the effort, but I’m sure some players will think so.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Druid – Circle of Spores highlights

Here are the highlights of the Circle of Spores Druid:

  • We’ve seen a lot of fungal creatures in The Forgotten Realms, and the Underdark is a location in the game, so it should be interesting to see if there are any unique encounters there.
  • I’m also curious to see if there are any interesting interactions between the mind flayer tadpole infestation and the spore infestation. It’s certainly not the most powerful Druid build, but it offers a unique and fun playstyle that’s sure to please some players, especially those who love farming mushrooms.
  • In the end, Druids are one of my favorite classes, as turning into animals using Wild Shape is just so darn fun. Of course, I’m not the only one who thinks so, as Druids are consistently among the most played characters in any given D&D game.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is leaving early access on August 3, so you’ll have just two weeks to decide on your first character when the RPG game goes live. If you’re not sure who to pick, then our Baldur’s Gate 3 characters guide is a great place to start.
