Baldur's Gate 3's 17,000 Endings

Baldur’s Gate 3 is set to have 17,000 different endings, and that’s still enough to get me excited. While the number of true endings will be in the low double-digits, some of you are still hungry for more content and variation after finishing the D&D game. Some of you, however, are less impressed by the number, pointing out that we’re actually talking about a lot less than 17,000 unique plotlines.

In an interview with PC Game Spotlight, Baldur’s Gate 3 lead writer Adam Brenin discusses the numbers behind BG3’s ending variations. Brenin clarifies that despite the game offering 17,000 variations, they’re not all entirely different conclusions.

“Just to be absolutely clear, that number is intended to refer to the number of different permutations of the game’s plot and story beats,” Brenin says. “We’re not promising 17,000 entirely different endings. That would be ridiculous.”

Some of you are still into the idea of so many potential conclusions, and I can’t blame you. Even if only a small number of those are truly satisfying conclusions, that’s still exciting. Of course, others of you feel that the marketing is a bit misleading, and that Baldur’s Gate 3 should be held accountable when it only delivers a fraction of what it’s selling.

Others compare the number of endings to BG3’s character customization sliders, pointing out that only a few are really necessary. That said, if there’s a slider for it and I can get it, I want it. I’m sure many of you are the same in that regard.

Regardless of where you fall on the excitement spectrum, you can’t deny that the upcoming RPG game is generating real interest. I’ve personally got my eye on it, and I’m sure many of you are the same. Whether you’re excited about the potential for variation, the characters and story, or the tactical combat, there’s something for everyone with Baldur’s Gate 3.

The game is also reportedly very lengthy, with one user claiming to have clocked 200 hours of gameplay in the open-world game. That’s a lot of time, but again, if it’s worth it, I’ll take it.

Brenin also clarifies that the game has 17,000 different choices that result in different endings, rather than 17,000 branches that can be taken. That’s still a lot, but it’s not quite as astronomical as it first seemed.

I’m sure you all have your opinions on the matter, so let us know in the comments. I’m personally excited and can’t wait to play the RPG when it finally releases.
