Baldur's Gate 3: A Nod to Final Fantasy 14

Baldur’s Gate 3 is already filled with references to pop culture, with nods to Pokémon Go and Fortnite included in the RPG game. Now, one Twitter user has spotted a hidden reference to a moment from Final Fantasy 14 that will definitely tug at your heartstrings, adding an extra layer of nostalgia and fun to both games.

“Folk Hero: A Smile Better Suits You” is one of the inspirations you can earn in Baldur’s Gate 3. When you see the name, you might think nothing of it, but Twitter user DividusYliaster spotted that the title is actually a nod to a specific line in Final Fantasy 14, and the way it’s phrased in the game is a near-exact replica.

“A smile better suits you.”

This saying is famously spoken by a dying character in the Heavensward expansion of Final Fantasy 14, who, after being rescued from the clutches of the Dragon King, fades away. It’s a poignant moment in the game, and has become a memorable line for its lovely sentiment.

It’s a small thing, but it shows how much love for other games is baked into the DNA of Larian Studios. Who at the studio picked up on the line from Final Fantasy 14, and will they get credit for their choice? We’ll never know. But I do know that I would love to have a house filled with Final Fantasy 14 references, and I’m sure many of you would as well.

This isn’t the first time a Final Fantasy 14 reference has popped up in another game either, with The Sims 4 also being filled with nods to the MMORPG. We’ve even got a guide on how to find Final Fantasy 14 references in The Sims 4 if you want to see them for yourself.

The inclusion of references from big games like Final Fantasy 14 just serve to add another layer of enjoyment to games we already love, reminding us of the emotional moments we’ve experienced within the game, and how connected we feel to the characters and their stories.

If you’re a fan of both games, this nod in Baldur’s Gate 3 will make you smile, and the connection between the two shows just how much of an impact Final Fantasy 14 has had on our industry.
