Baldur's Gate 3 companions – who's in your party?

Baldur’s Gate 3 has plenty of companions for you to choose from, but the RPG game is already making it difficult for me to pick just one. It’s true that the options available to you are only limited by your imagination, but the sheer number of potential party members in the upcoming game means that it’s difficult even to make a decision.

Within moments of starting the game, I’m faced with a decision: which companion do I want to trick the guards with? Do I want to use the trapdoor and climb down into the sewers, or do I want to use the rock, which would probably break if thrown that high. The tutorialising church presents me with these options, but I can see that I’m going to have to make a lot more difficult choices during my time with Baldur’s Gate 3.

In my first conversation with Black Talon leader Talon, I’m immediately struck by just how much choice this game offers. It’s not just the big plot decisions, either; no matter how short the conversation, there’s always a comment I could make that could have some kind of impact in the future.

Baldur’s Gate 3 companions – who’s in your party?

In my playthrough, I’ve categorised the companions based on their attractiveness, combat skills, and overall interest as characters. I’m sorry, Lae’zel, but you’re just not my type. I’ll be spending most of my time with this bunch, though it’s difficult to say who’ll be making the cut right now.

Astarion – the githyanki mage is certainly a hot contender for my final party spot. I’m branching away from humanity and exploring the Githyanki race, so his knowledge of a cure for brain worms certainly adds to my inclination to choose him. I’m not sure he’ll make the cut, though, as I’m unsure how good he is in combat and my interest in him is mostly based on the novelty of his race.

Lae’zel – she’s smart, funny, and has a cool robotic arm. She also knows a lot about the Underdark and its denizens, which could come in handy, and her knowledge of a cure for brain worms puts her ahead of the competition. I’m still not sure whether to take her or Wyll, but I’m leaning more towards her.

Wyll – I’m not completely sold on Wyll – I don’t know much about him beyond the fact that he’s a bard. He did, however, save my life in a tight spot, so I’m definitely grateful for that. He’s also fairly attractive, which is a plus, and his flute playing is adorable. I’m still not 100% sure if I’m going to take him, but he could be a contender.

Karlach – Karlach is a warrior, and while I’m not completely sold on him, he’s certainly a good fighter. The only thing that puts me off is his attitude, but I could deal with it if he’s good at what he does.
