Baldur’s Gate 3 Character Creator: Impressively Versatile

If you’re excited for the next installment in the classic RPG series, you’re probably wondering what the character creator is like. Well, I’m here to tell you that it’s pretty damn great. The team at Overhaul Games has clearly put a lot of thought into the customization options, and the result is a character creator that allows you to create a wide range of characters, including realistic trans characters.

I’m talking, of course, about my very own Drow Ranger, Lúthien. She’s a Drow Ranger, of course, because I like Drow. She also just happens to be a trans Drow because I like trans people (myself included). The options for Drow hair, Drow scars, Drow voice, and Drow backstory are all excellent, but I also want to talk about the Beholder tattoo and how I chose a silly hat.

Starting with the tattoos, there are a few options for Drow runes, but the Beholder tattoo is a piece of body art that, while very cool, is perhaps a bit silly. The back story behind it is that Lúthien escaped from the cult of Lolth in Menzoberranzan, and rather than remove her tattoos she just sort of added to them. Given that it’s a D&D game, it’s entirely possible that this is connected to her deceased mother or her past in the cult (seriously, I’m not retconning this every time I find a silly item), but, in the real world, I really just chose it because it looks cool and it’s silly.

Next is the hat, which is a tricorn with an absurdly tall crown. It’s essentially a silly hat. It has no buffs, it doesn’t contribute to gameplay, and it destroys my character design. But, I love it. I love it so much. I tried it on, fell in love with it immediately, and then tried to equip it, despite it not fitting my character. I’ll probably retcon it into Lúthien’s backstory as something she found in a Mindflayer nest after escaping from their clutches. I am now officially introducing myself as Lúthien’s character in the game: I’m ready to drink whiskey, defeat enemies, and have a good time. Unfortunately, I’m out of whiskey.

After escaping from Mindflayers, Lúthien quickly equips appropriate weapons and recruits allies. She levels up, finds a silly hat, and I’ll let you know if she finds anything else in the wilds of Faerûn.

The author would like to state that they did not drink any whiskey while making this character.
