Baldur's Gate 3 split screen co-op limitation on PC

The long-awaited Baldur’s Gate 3 release date has officially landed on PC, but there’s a big PC split-screen co-op limitation you need to know about. While it’s great that you can play the role-playing game on PC, PC keyboard and mouse players are left out of the split-screen co-op fun.

The new RPG game is coming out of early access and is officially launching on PC, but if you plan on playing with a friend or family member sitting next to you then you’ll need to have two separate controllers. That’s because the game only supports split-screen co-op when playing with two controllers, not a mix of controller and keyboard/mouse.

There’s no mention of this split-screen co-op limitation anywhere in the game or on its Steam pages or forums, so I suspect a lot of players will unintentionally find out about it the hard way. I’ve been playing the game for a few hours and didn’t see anything that indicated you needed two controllers, so it’s not particularly clear.

If you’re just looking to play with another player physically present then you’ll need multiple controllers, there’s no way around that. However, if you have someone who wants to play at the same distance as you but using keyboard and mouse then it seems like it should be possible. Sadly, it’s not.

Baldur’s Gate 3 isn’t the only game to struggle with split-screen co-op on Xbox consoles, causing a delay in its release on consoles. The Xbox Series S also struggles with performance problems in split-screen co-op, highlighting a larger issue that Microsoft still hasn’t fixed.

The split-screen co-op limitations in Baldur’s Gate 3 have already caused some players to express their frustration on social media. Our The Elder Scrolls: Blades co-op review puts a spotlight on the lack of information about split-screen co-op, especially given how long fans have been waiting for its arrival.

If you’re playing on console then you’ll have to wait a little longer to play the new RPG game, as the release date for Baldur’s Gate 3 on Xbox consoles is currently unknown.
