Baldur’s Gate 3 will mark the return of Larian Studios to the beloved RPG series, but don’t worry, there are still more Divinity games on the way. In fact, Baldur’s Gate 3 won’t even stop Larian from returning to its own Divinity universe, as the studio plans to take a break before diving back in.

Larian Studios will continue to make Divinity games

Speaking to PC Game Spotlight at GDC, Larian boss Swen Vincke confirms that the Belgian developer will follow up Baldur’s Gate 3 with more Divinity games.

“We’re going to finish BG3, and then we’re going to take a break,” Vincke says. “We’re going to recharge creatively, then we’re going to come back and pick up where we left off. We have a few cool ideas.”

Larian Studios didn’t just come back from a break after the first Divinity, either. Divinity: Original Sin and its sequel, Divinity: Original Sin 2, are considered among the best modern RPGs and among the best games of the past few years.

Vincke also talks about how Larian has been building up to Baldur’s Gate 3 for some time now, with over 400 developers working on the game. Larian has built up a huge team for the follow-up to the original Baldur’s Gate, and Vincke says it’s been a long time coming.

“We’ve been working on the game for a long time,” Vincke says. “It’s been over 20 years since the first Divinity game. We’ve come a long way, we’ve made a lot of mistakes, and we’ve had a lot of successes.”

Of those successes, Divinity: Original Sin and Divinity: Original Sin 2 are definitely at the top of the list. Larian found massive success with the first game after launching a Kickstarter, and the series has offered open, flexible gameplay and an opportunity for Larian to explore its own universe.

That’s where the comparison with Baldur’s Gate comes in, as Vincke says the D&D setting often comes with limitations.

“We have a lot more freedom to do things in our own way,” Vincke says of the Divinity series. “In the BG games, we’re always constrained by the D&D rules. We have to make sure everything follows the rules, and that’s sometimes a bit stifling.”

If you’re a fan of the Divinity games, then this news will be music to your ears, as Larian is responsible for putting both Divinity: Original Sin and Divinity: Original Sin 2 onto our list of the best PC games of 2023.

That said, Larian has certainly branched out in recent years, with Divinity: Dragon Commander being a strategy game and Divinity 2 being a third-person ARPG. Vincke says they’re not afraid to experiment with new genres.

“We’ll always come back to the space that we carved out for ourselves,” Vincke says. “We’re going to take a breather, we’re going to do BG3, then we’re going to come back to the Divinity universe and expand that space.”
