Beware the Underdark in Baldur’s Gate 3

Sure, it might look like a cool place to hang out for a while, but its inhabitants are powerful, and even the most experienced D&D players would be challenged to navigate its twisting tunnels and caverns. Of course, we’re talking about those who have access to the high-level area, as the current state of Early Access restricts you to a maximum level of five.

While you might be able to handle a few goblins and hobgoblins in the streets of Baldur’s Gate, the Underdark is a whole other kettle of fish. The many entrances to this cavernous area are difficult to find, and their position is randomized every time you start a new game. It’s also worth mentioning that you have to be around Level 5 before you even think about exploring the Underdark, so if you’re just starting out, you’ll have to get used to the game’s various systems before venturing into this dark and dangerous place.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Underdark entrances

There are multiple Underdark entrances in BG 3, and while they’re all difficult to find, they all require different approaches to reach. We’ve outlined the steps you need to take to access each one below.

The Underdark’s main enemy is the Minotaur, and if you’ve played the previous games in the series, you’ll know that their weakness lies in their knee caps. Distance attacks are your best bet against these brutish beasts.

Whether you’re exploring the Underdark or taking a stroll through the streets of Baldur’s Gate, you’ll need to be able to see in the dark. Darkvision is a useful ability for characters who don’t want to be caught off guard by Minotaurs or the Blighted Rat King, and you can find characters who possess this skill in the Elves, Gnomes, and Tieflings.

The easiest entrance to find is the Blighted Village. You can reach the Underdark by traveling to the northwest corner of the map, where you’ll find a well that leads to the Whispering Depths. The only caveat is that you’ll have to take on the Phase Spider Matriarch before you can proceed. The good news is that you can leave the fight by climbing the well, so you don’t have to worry about dying.

The Zhentarim Hideout, on the other hand, is a little trickier to locate. You’ll want to head to The Risen Roads, which is north of the Blighted Village. Make your way to the eastern section of the area, where you’ll find a small path that leads to a furnace. Mind the fiery ground, and use water to pass through.

Keep going north until you reach Waukeen’s Rest, where you’ll find an entrance to the Zhentarim Hideout. If you’re having trouble finding it, you can use magic to reveal its location.

The Defiled Temple is within the Goblin Camp, and you’ll know that you’re in the right location if you see a moon puzzle in the temple’s main room. To solve this puzzle, you’ll need to rotate the moon discs to match the phases of the moon.

The ladder in the temple leads to a Selune Outpost in the Underdark. This is only accessible with the Whispering Mask equipped, which you’ll receive as part of the quest The Moonlit Path.

This is the hardest entrance to find, and even more difficult to navigate. You’ll need to pass through illusions and traps before making your way through poisonous gas. The good news is that you can leave the cave by climbing the well in the Hag’s Lair.

Again, we recommend defeating the Hag before attempting this entrance, as she’ll stop spawning once you complete the quest The Hag’s Demise.

That just about covers everything you need to know about the Underdark in Baldur’s Gate 3. Make sure you’re well-equipped before venturing into this dangerous area, and make sure you know how to use Baldur’s Gate 3 mounts to make your journey easier.
