Divinity: Original Sin 2 or Baldur’s Gate 3?

Larian Studios’ classic RPG is considered “a great game,” but it can’t compete with the storytelling and improved mechanics of the latest entry in the Baldur’s Gate series. That’s the general consensus among players who have jumped into Larian’s latest Divinity: Original Sin 2 Enhanced Edition and then played through the latest entry in the series, which shares the same developer and similar gameplay.

“Divinity: Original Sin 2 is a great game and I highly recommend it, but it can’t hold a candle to BG3,” one user writes. “The scope, scale, and story of BG3 is something I’ve never seen in an RPG,” another explains.

Although opinions on Divinity: Original Sin 2 are mixed, with some considering it one of their all-time favorites, many agree that it can’t compete with its sequel. Some players praise the game for its great stories and strategic challenges that can be overcome in a number of ways, but others say they had difficulty getting into the game due to its combat mechanics or a lack of direction.

“Having played both, I’d say go for BG3,” one user replies to someone who recommends D:OS2. “The combat is much smoother, the story is better paced, and there’s definitely direction throughout.”

“Divinity: Original Sin 2 is a good game, but it’s not a great game,” another user writes. “It’s Dungeons and Dragons-Lite, the combat is clunky, and it’s missing some of the best features of Baldur’s Gate,” such as the “intricate and deep” interaction mechanics and the ability to create your own party members.

Others suggest using guides or treating the game like a tabletop RPG to fully enjoy it. “If you’re a fan of tabletop, you’ll find a lot to love here,” one writes. “If you like your rpgs to be more directed and like you to stick to the script, this is definitely not the game for you,” another explains.

One user shares a humorous rant about a woolen shirt in D:OS2 that led them to uninstall the game, while another points out the ludonarrative dissonance in the game’s scaling of armor. “It’s like, ‘Okay, I’m a mage, so I don’t need armor, but I also don’t want to get roasted alive, so I guess I should wear armor,’” they explain.

While Divinity: Original Sin 2 may not appeal to everyone, it still receives praise for its depth and options. If nothing else, maybe it will help you decide whether or not you should try out Baldur’s Gate 3 next.
