Want to know how to beat Viconia DeVir in the House of Grief?

We're deep in the heart of Baldur's Gate 3's story at this point, and you're likely to have arrived at the House of Grief. This location is important to Shadowheart's journey, and her past secrets lie within.

The House of Grief is but one location in the city of Baldur's Gate, and you'll need to travel here in order to continue with Shadowheart's story. You'll arrive in the northwestern side of the Lower City, but be warned that the Sharran cultists here are hostile and will attack on sight. You'll be able to enter the House of Grief itself, but before we delve into that, here's what you need to know about Baldur's Gate 3 House of Grief.

Baldur's Gate 3 House of Grief boss information

To enter the House of Grief, speak with Mirie, demand to be let through, and submit to the mapping. You'll be able to continue into the building itself, where another cutscene will play out.

Inside the House of Grief, you'll encounter a number of Sharrans, all of which can be defeated with ease. Eventually, you'll come across Viconia, the Mother Superior, who is speaking with Shadowheart. Your party will comment on her strength, to which she replies that none of you are worth her time. Speak to her yourself and the following conversation will play out, depending on Shadowheart's path:

  • If you side with Viconia and betray Shadowheart, she'll leave the group. You'll also be able to access the Sharran network and learn more about the cult. If you don't side with Viconia, she'll attack, along with several Sharrans.

Viconia DeVir, Mother Superior of Shar, is a formidable opponent. She reflects Radiant damage and deals it back at double its original value. Clerics and paladins may struggle in this fight, as will anyone relying on healing spells. Viconia also reflects spells and can use a number of attacks, including an area of effect spell. She also has the ability to summon skeletons and a horde of rats.

It's recommended that you bring a number of spellcasters, as well as anyone with a high mobility and crowd control. You'll want to separate your spellcaster from the rest of the group and draw Viconia away from the rest. This will give your spellcaster the room they need to attack without worrying about friendly fire.

Before speaking with Viconia, separate the spellcaster from the rest of the group and draw Viconia away from the rest of the Sharrans. Spread your party out, use crowd control on the weaker enemies, and focus on the high-level Justiciars. Only attack Viconia after defeating all the other Sharrans.

In battle, you'll want to spread out your party. Use crowd control to split up the Justiciars and deal with them one at a time. You'll also want to use spells that inflict Blindness, as these are ineffective against Viconia and her followers. Viconia reflects spells, so you may want to use large area attacks instead. If you can hit Viconia with a Counterspell, this will stop her from using her more powerful abilities.

When Viconia uses Sunder the Heretical against you, potions and healing spells are crucial. She also reflects spells, which can be an advantage if you're using spells that give her a disadvantage to her melee attacks. Other spells, such as Daylight, can also be useful.

This fight will be challenging, so you'll need persistence and a good deal of strategy. With careful planning and execution, you should be able to achieve victory against Viconia in the House of Grief.
