Call of Duty 2024: Embracing the Classic Black Ops Feel
Call of Duty 2024 should steer clear of Black Ops 3’s confusing and eccentric themes. While the current Infinity Ward era has shaken up the franchise by delving into equally off-putting settings, Treyarch’s next Call of Duty game actually looks to go back to basics. With the Red Dead Redemption 2 studio on a break before its next project, it’s slated to helm the 2024 Call of Duty game, and we have some ideas as to what we’d like to see come to fruition.
Black Ops 3 was a wealth of ideas mashed together, but in the end, they weren’t all that cohesive. The game took a major step forward by going full-on futuristic with a near-future setting and emphasizing cybernetic enhancement. Players could, for the first time, enter the mind of protagonist Nick Mason and experience his simulated memories. The campaign heavily revolved around an AI virus named Corvus that hacked into the digital neural interface of enhanced soldiers and led to some, uh, mind-bending sequences.
While breaking new storytelling ground has its merits, Black Ops 3 was so ambitious that it left the campaign feeling confusing and ultimately forgettable for some players. It could be a simple problem of Infinity Ward simply biting off more than it could chew, but who better to learn from and counteract that than Treyarch?
We don’t know much about what the 2024 Call of Duty game will entail, but leaks suggest we may be getting a return to the classic Black Ops feel. Rumors say it will be set in the 1990s, specifically during the Black Hawk Down incident in Somalia. This would return the franchise to the Cold War setting of the original Black Ops – and to a similar era as classic series entries 5, 6, and Modern Warfare 2.
We’re all for this shift away from futuristic elements and aligning the franchise instead to its roots. It would maintain the classic feel of the franchise while allowing for a fresh story and new characters.
If Treyarch sticks to that 90s theme, here’s our wishlist of features we’d like to see in the gameplay and when we get to play the new Call of Duty game.
