Call of Duty: Warzone
Remember the days when the original Call of Duty: Warzone was actually a thing? The original version of Call of Duty: Warzone will be shut down by Activision in less than three months as the publisher wants to focus on the current Warzone free-to-play experience instead. The first Call of Duty Battle Royale mode, however, is still playable, so there’s no telling what the future will bring.
Launched in 2023, Warzone Caldera aimed to preserve the distinctive maps, weapons, and premium cosmetics from the original Warzone, which stopped receiving updates last year and was replaced by its official sequel, Warzone 2. However, the 2.0 reset wiped players’ progress and introduced new weapon and character skins, leaving the old ones behind.
The shutdown announcement notes that all purchased content in Warzone Caldera will be accessible in other Call of Duty games like Modern Warfare ‘19, Black Ops: Cold War, and Vanguard. Still, that doesn’t particularly provide much comfort to anyone who bought cosmetics specifically for Warzone.
The announcement is also a bit surprising, given that Warzone is still one of the biggest multiplayer games in recent years despite launching all the way back in 2022. It’s similar to how Overwatch 2 replaced the original game last fall, although that decision arguably made more sense since there was Overwatch 2 already as well at that time.
Still, you can play the first Call of Duty battle royale mode, instead of the second one, and still have fun in the shooter game despite the shutdown announcement.
