Dungeons & Dragons introduces playable Hobgoblins

Dungeons & Dragons introduces playable Hobgoblins, offering players an exciting new character option in the fantasy RPG game. While Hobgoblins are part of the Goblinoid category, similarities to Elves and a resistance to charms make them a unique fantasy character with interesting story arcs.

Hobgoblins are often portrayed as stronger than Goblins and weaker than Bugbears. Hobgoblins can face discrimination from NPCs, and may even be viewed as villains. However, if you’re playing a soldier character, there are plenty of interesting features to consider.

We recommend discussing your character concept with your Dungeon Master to determine if the theme you’re going for is appropriate for your campaign. If it is, Dungeons & Dragons Hobgoblins offer a wider range of utility and intrigue than ever before.

Dungeons & Dragons Hobgoblin abilities

Playable Hobgoblins bring their Help action to the table, providing Tank or Support roles in the frontline. They can also serve as the leader of a small group, in part because they can easily command animals and other entities.

Being near allies provides a number of benefits to Hobgoblins. They can use their Help action frequently, aiding allies with attacks and abilities. If you’re playing a ranged character, you’re still going to see some of these benefits, albeit less frequently.

The Dungeons & Dragons rules state that the following characters are good combinations for Hobgoblins:

The Dungeons & Dragons books don’t specify any specific classes for Hobgoblins, but you can use the guidelines above as a starting point. Melee Spellcasters like Hexblade Warlocks and Bladesinger Wizards are also viable options, and Volo’s version even provides you with martial weapon and light armor proficiency, which can be helpful for Sorcerers, Warlocks, and Wizards.

Ultimately, your class choice depends on your personal preferences and your playstyle. Always discuss your character ideas with your Dungeon Master before you create your Dungeons & Dragons character sheet.
