Destiny 2's Regular Updates Undergo a Significant Change

Destiny 2 updates have received a revamp following news earlier this week that Sony is acquiring Bungie. Noticing that the studio’s weekly updates for the FPS game have undergone a notable change, it could potentially be a taste of other things to come from the RPG game and Bungie‘s development of multiple new IPs in the coming years.

Frustrations and Anticipations of the Destiny 2 Community

For Bungie’s players, Destiny 2’s ongoing seasonal content and weekly updates typically serve as a highlight of the week. There is, however, an increasing level of frustration among players about the frequency of server maintenance and downtime, which often sparks conversation about the much-anticipated Destiny 3‘s pending release.

Despite those gripes, there’s no denying that the Destiny 2 community is – by and large – highly anticipating Destiny 2’s next expansion, The Final Shape, and what the ongoing Season of the Deep has in store. But if you’re part of the fanbase, you may notice a slight change in this week’s update.

The Transition: TWAB to TWID

Bungie has traditionally posted TWABs on a fairly consistent basis, providing transparency to fans about upcoming releases, as well as changes to the game that are about to take place during the weekly update.

Last week, however, Bungie unveiled TWID, in which game director Luke Smith highlighted upcoming changes to the Crucible balance and broader topics like the overall health of the Destiny 2 economy. It also launched a broader initiative to deliver more of these types of content going forward.

This move signifies a pivotal shift in Bungie’s plans going forward, implying a new era in the studio in which updates and announcements may go beyond the realms of just Destiny 2. This newfound opportunity is due, in large part, to the fact that Bungie is now a wholly owned Apple studio following the acquisition.

Considering Bungie’s plans for multiple new IPs in the coming years, this pivot toward broader content could indicate a regular cadence of updates for players to anticipate during a Bungie Era that will span multiple games. These other projects may serve as additional touch points for players through various content-driven communities to foster a shared sense of culture and belonging within the broader Bungie community.

Exciting Prospects Ahead

With Marathon on the horizon with little to no fanfare, and the impending launch of Season 22 for Destiny 2 in the next couple of months, it appears that Bungie’s new era is already in full swing. We’ll see more of The Final Shape before it’s officially released in 2024, and the current season is more exciting than ever.

Destiny 2 is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
