The first game in the Devil May Cry series began as the fourth entry in the Resident Evil franchise before becoming a standalone spin-off. Since its inception, the series has gained popularity for its hack-and-slash gameplay, gunplay, difficulty, and atmospheric visuals. The games span several years, with plenty of callbacks, cameos, and crossovers with other Capcom properties. The DMC games can be placed in chronological order of Dante’s adventures as follows:

Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening

Dante’s exploits are a prequel to the first game, Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening, which showcases a younger, cocky Dante facing off against his twin brother, Vergil. Tragedy strikes when Dante is unable to save his mother from a demon attack and is left with the series’ iconic X-shaped scar on his face. The events of Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening take place a decade before the first game.

Devil May Cry

The first game in the Devil May Cry series, Devil May Cry, was released in 2001. It introduces Dante and his quest to defeat the demon lord Mundus. Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening acts as a prequel to the first game and is set a decade before the events of Devil May Cry.

Devil May Cry 2

Devil May Cry 2 was released in 2003, following Dante’s mission to stop Arius from raising the demon Argosax. It acts as a prequel to the first game and is set a decade before the events of Devil May Cry.

Devil May Cry 4

Devil May Cry 4 was released in 2008 and introduces a new playable character, Nero, tasked with stopping Dante. The game is set several years after the events of Devil May Cry 2.

Devil May Cry 5

Devil May Cry 5, released in 2019, is set five years after Devil May Cry 4.
