Everything's better when you're wetter as a water genasi
Want to know more about the Dungeons & Dragons Water Genasi species? The water genasi is a playable race in the 5th edition of the tabletop game, and it’s the perfect choice for adventurers who enjoy aquatic campaigns. This guide delves into the water genasi’s abilities, strengths, and weaknesses to help you decide whether this race is right for you.
Water genasi traits
Water genasi have a blue or greenish skin tone that seems constantly wet, and they may have fins, webbing, or gills. They can breathe underwater and generate water by magic. Water genasi have a walking and swimming speed of 30 feet, and they have resistance to acid damage. They can breathe air and water, and they can use their action to create a bubble of water around their head, giving them the ability to breathe while underwater.
Water genasi also have darkvision, allowing them to see in dim light and darkness underwater. Finally, water genasi have innate water-based magic, including the acid splash cantrip and the create or destroy water spell, which allows them to create or destroy water within 30 feet of them. Water genasi can also cast the water walk spell without a material component.
Water genasi classes
You can choose from various classes when creating a water genasi character. As a playable race in Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes, these were the classes available to water genasi:
Bard and Paladin both benefit from the water genasi’s spells and abilities. Bard is a solid choice for a water genasi character, as you can use your innate water magic to support your allies. Paladin also works well for a water genasi, as the Dungeons & Dragons Paladin spell list includes several spells that are typically only available to clerics and druids.
Warlock can access spells not typically available to them, including certain cleric and druid spells, which can be helpful to have access to. However, it’s not worth losing your other abilities to gain access to these spells as they’re not typically available to you as a warlock due to religious reasons.
Sorcerer and Wizard both benefit from the water genasi’s spells, but each does so in a different way. Sorcerer can learn the same spells but gain flexibility in their spell selections. Conversely, Wizard can learn the same spells but can protect their hitpoints with water genasi’s acid resistance.
The Fathomless subclass and Gift of the Depths Eldritch Invocation should be avoided as they duplicate water genasi abilities.

The playable water genasi in the core books of Dungeons & Dragons are:
We currently have three water genasi variants: the moon genasi, silt genasi, and sky genasi. The moon genasi is an offshoot of the water genasi, as it’s a genasi of the elemental earth. Silt genasi are offshoots of the water genasi, and you can find out more about them in the Lost Empires of Faerûn supplement. Finally, sky genasi are offshoots of the water genasi, and you can learn about them in the Storm King’s Thunder adventure book.
