Fallout 4 is my new favorite Star Wars game

That’s not a typo, and it’s not even really that funny – I’m dead serious. That’s because the prospect of Star Wars mods in Bethesda’s upcoming Starfield is already shaping up to be better than what we’d get in a hypothetical Star Wars games from one of the big developers. I’m talking about full-blown, deep-diving Star Wars RPG mods in Starfield that turn the sci-fi open-world game into a full-fledged Star Wars game.

The potential of Starfield modding

There are a lot of great Star Wars games out there, from the classic Rogue Squadron games on PS1 and N64 to the more recent Star Wars: Jedi Knight and Force Unleashed series. But with the community-driven potential of Starfield modding, I’m almost positive that we’ll eventually get a better, more detailed Star Wars game than any of those through community-made content.

Of course, it’s not just Star Wars that we’re talking about here. We’ll have all kinds of medieval mods, stealth archer builds, high fashion, lightsaber/gun mods, and whatever else your imagination can conjure up. But Star Wars is what got me personally invested in the prospect of Starfield mods, and I’m not alone.

“I’m excited to see what people make for Starfield,” one user writes. “Stealth archer, medieval mods, high fashion, lightsaber/gun mods, and of course Star Wars.” Another chimes in with “Skyrim mods in Starfield,” which I think is a great joke that I’m willing to run with.

We already know there will be a mod community for Starfield, and the prospect of turning it into a mod-driven Star Wars game is already a “modder’s gold rush.” I’m not saying this to be funny or dismissive of Star Wars game developers – I love Star Wars games, I just love PC modding.

I also appreciate the concern around monetization, because I don’t want to see modders get legal threats from Disney only to have Bethesda and Microsoft rake in the money themselves. Hopefully it’s all just free and legal, but I know that’s a lot to ask.

I’m also personally concerned about whether Starfield will be a disappointing game filled with microtransactions, because let’s be real – that’s what all of Bethesda’s games will ultimately become. So, I guess my excitement for modding Starfield and turning it into a (hopefully) free Star Wars game is a way of expressing my desire for a game that doesn’t have microtransactions.

Despite my cynicism, I still love Bethesda’s games because they’re so damn moddable on PC. I know some people hate them for the same reason, but I’ll always defend the ability to mod games on PC as an incredible service that should be protected, celebrated, and celebrated even more with mod support.

I also want Starfield to be a huge, detailed game with high-quality writing. That’s basically what I loved about Fallout 4, and it’s also what I love about Star Wars, so here’s hoping Starfield can deliver on that.

“I don’t know, I guess I just never thought about it,” one user replies to the Star Wars discussion with “‘In space, no one can hear you scream’ – The lyrics of an Alice In Chains song.” I love it, and I’m going to use it to end this article.
