Much like the metal colossus from Wakka’s DLC, the Iron Giant has a wide range of attacks that all need to be dodged carefully to give you an opportunity to inflict damage. Here’s what you need to know about the Iron Giant in Final Fantasy 16, including notable attacks and the best strategies to emerge victorious in the RPG game.
Final Fantasy 16 Iron Giant attacks
During the first phase of the Final Fantasy 16 Iron Giant fight, the giant will use lunging attacks and spins that are easy to discern based on the tells. The Iron Giant will raise its left arm and hesitate before bringing it down quickly in an overhead slash. Alternatively, the Iron Giant will spin on its heel if you’re at a distance. These two moves can be considered the giant’s main attack for this phase and are easy to dodge. Look for its telltale signs, watch for its hands to tense up, and then dodge to the left or to the right to avoid the attack.
Throughout the battle, the Iron Giant will pull out other moves, many of which are based on the Final Fantasy 15 Iron Giant. One attack that the giant will unleash in this section harkens back to the electric charge. The Iron Giant will bring its left arm down on the platform and will send electricity rippling across the ground in the direction of the blow. This move can be quite tricky if you’re standing on the opposite side of the Iron Giant, so watch out.
There are a lot of attacks that the Final Fantasy 16 Iron Giant will introduce in the latter half of the fight, but fortunately, everything starts to make more sense with the second phase. The Iron Giant will begin to charge up an attack that will cover the platform in fire that erupts underneath your feet. Watch out for the Iron Giant’s body to stiffen and for it to point its hand to the sky. Soon after it makes that gesture, flames will erupt under your feet, so you need to dodge quickly. You can also apply the ‘guess which direction the flames will erupt’ mechanic to this attack and sidestep the flames on the opposite side.
During this phase, the most important mechanic is being able to drain the stamina bar associated with the Atomic Ray charge. This bar is shown just below the Iron Giant’s health bar. When the giant uses this charge, a white line will appear under your feet; if you are standing under the rising white line, you will take damage. If you can manage to drain the stamina charge, the Iron Giant will be stunned, allowing you to unleash attacks while the giant cannot move. If you can land a combo of attacks that hits this bar, you can potentially take off huge chunks of the Iron Giant’s health.
This concept gets much more complicated in the latter stage of the fight because the giant will start throwing in several other attacks in conjunction with the Atomic Ray, such as the Sparking Charge and Spin. These two attacks, as you might imagine, revolve around the Spark enemy line. The giant will sometimes throw in copycat Sparking Charge and Sparking Spin attacks that are dealing damage. The giant spins and dashes forward, generating electrical sparks at the tip of its elbow. Likewise, the giant charges along the platform, generating electrical sparks at the tip of its elbow. It can be hard to discern the damage from these attacks separately from the Atomic Ray, so look for the sparks – they can give you some indication.
In the end, the best way to bring down the Iron Giant is to learn its tells and dodge in the direction opposite the attack. The Iron Giant’s weak spot is its head, but you need to find a way to get around its devastating range. When you learn the giant’s moves, you can take advantage of its telegraphs and avoid taking damage.
