LoL surrender changes are coming in Patch 13.16
Riot reveals more details about its new surrender vote requirements. The changes aim to make surrendering a more collaborative team decision, with players now needing to meet new requirements before initiating a vote.
Surrender votes have been a hot topic since Riot introduced the mechanic in League of Legends, as some players feel it gives one or two players on a losing team too much power. Riot is hoping its new surrender vote requirements will encourage more teamwork and discourage early surrendering, although we imagine there will still be plenty of heated surrender conversations in the MOBA.
Surrendering in League of Legends is about to become a lot more difficult, as Riot reveals that a majority of players will now need to agree before a surrender vote can pass. Previously, a single player could initiate a vote without input from their teammates, but any player who does not participate in the vote will now be counted as a “no” vote.
“When we first introduced surrender, it was with the intention of providing a second life for teams who could no longer engage in the kind of collaboration required for high-level League of Legends gameplay,” Riot explains. “However, surrender has been a source of contention among players for years – some believe it promotes collaboration, while others feel it allows a single player or a small group to dictate the outcome of the game.”
“We’ve always kept an eye on the surrender vote rate, and while the vast majority of games end with a collaborative surrender decision, surrender has been the outcome of roughly 20% of games since the start of the season.”
Riot gathers feedback from the player community
Riot says it has gathered feedback from the player community to determine why surrendering occurs, with the decision to change League of Legends surrender vote requirements coming as a result. The developer says it wants to ensure that players are “actively participating” in surrender vote discussions to have their voice heard, although we imagine the new system could lead to even more strategic decision-making and better team coordination.
The changes have already sparked mixed reactions among the League of Legends community, but Riot says it remains committed to refining the surrender system based on player feedback.
“We’ve made a number of changes to the surrender system over the years, and we’ll continue to refine the system based on your feedback,” the developer says. “We’re confident that these changes will improve the overall experience for players and help refocus surrender onto what it’s meant to be: a collaborative decision-making tool for teams who can no longer engage in the kind of high-level League of Legends gameplay that we all aspire to.”
