Pokemon World Champions Luminosity Gaming Call for Changes in Pokemon Unite

Pokemon World Champions Luminosity Gaming have shared their thoughts on what changes need to be made in Pokemon Unite, and the majority have requested draft mode be added to ranked mode. After sweeping through the competition without dropping a game, Luminosity has outlined their thoughts for what needs to be changed in the Gens 1 through 3 title as it enters its third year.

Team Members Speak Up

“There’s so many changes that I want to see in Unite,” team member Kyriaos begins. “I feel like there’s really nothing that needs to be changed in Gens 1 and 2, but Gen 3 is in dire need of some buffs and some balance changes.” The majority of Luminosity’s team members, including Kyriaos, Sean ‘Slash’ Tucker, and William ‘Overlord’ Byrnes III, have outlined what they’d like to see changed in Unite.

Kyriaos has mentioned the need for consistent emblem earning, mobile customization, and better ranked rewards. Slash and Overlord both supported the inclusion of bans or drafts in ranked mode in order to address balance issues and make the game more enjoyable.

“Draft or bans [in] ranked,” Overlord shares, “because the metagame is in such an overpowered state at the moment that you can’t really play ranked with the current tier.” He specifically mentions Zacian and Mewtwo as examples of Pokemon that need to be changed or banned in order for ranked mode to be playable.

“I do agree with them,” Unite commentator and YouTuber Spragels responds. “I think we definitely need bans or drafts in ranked because at the current state of the metagame, we need to be able to quickly remove the overpowered Pokemon from the playable pool.”

Spragels continues, “Drafting would allow you to do exactly that. You could take all of the overpowered Pokemon and put them all in a separate pile, and then pick the ones you want to play with. If you pick Mewtwo, then you’re not going to be able to pick any of the other ones, and if you pick Zacian, then you’re not going to be able to pick any of the other ones.”

“It would just immediately improve balance because you could remove the overpowered ones from the playable pool,” Spragels continues. “And it would also kind of mirror the competitive setting, where you’re not allowed to use them, either.”

Despite some changes, the ranked ladder still suffers from poor balance that has been a persistent issue throughout Unite’s history. Adding draft to ranked mode would provide a significant, immediate solution that would allow for more measured balance changes in the long run.
