A Mario-Zelda Crossover RPG: What Could It Look Like?
A RPG">Mario-Zelda Crossover RPG would be awesome, according to users. After years of wondering why such a game hasn’t been made, with the occasional fan project popping up to give us hope, we decided to ask the Nintendo community what they think a Mario and Zelda RPG together would look like. The responses range from hopeful to downright hilarious, with a few crossovers thrown in for good measure.
If we’re being honest, a Mario RPG with Link or Sonic would probably be great. The three have appeared in a few games together, most notably Super Mario Bros. 2 on NES, so why not make a full game? BioWare made a Sonic RPG on DS, which got decent reviews, and we’re sure a Mario RPG would be a similar success.
“I’d love to see Mario and Zelda crossover in an RPG,” one user says. “I’d love to see a Mario and Link adventure with all the characters from both Nintendo worlds.” Others point out that Nintendo did a better job with the Rabbids crossover than their own IPs, so a Mario-Zelda crossover RPG might be well received.
“I’d love an RPG game where you can play as different characters and choose your path as you progress,” one user replies. “Something where you can have a good time with your friends, like an interactive story with puzzles.” Others mention things like Super Smash Bros and the recent Rabbids game as crossover games, but these are generally fighting games with little narrative. Personally, I’d love an RPG like the old gamebooks I used to read as a kid – those were fun.
“I’d love a Super Adventure Bros or Subspace Emissary-style game,” one user says. “Something where you can play as different characters and choose your path as you progress.” Another replies with, “I’d love a Subspace Emissary 2.” In case you don’t know, Subspace Emissary was a mode in Super Smash Bros Brawl where you controlled a group of characters and explored a world filled with enemies and boss fights. It was great, and we’d love to see a similar story mode in a potential Mario-Zelda crossover game.
There are already some crossovers between Mario and Zelda, like Link’s Awakening and Mario Maker 2, so we know Nintendo isn’t afraid of a crossover or two. We’ve also seen Samus and Link appear as Easter Egg appearances in Super Mario RPG, so why not more? I’d love to see a game with Link and Samus as playable characters, as well as all sorts of cameos from other Nintendo characters.
“Super Smash Bros Adventures,” one user says. “Or just Super Quest Bros.” Other users suggest names like Super Smash Bros RPG, Super Quest Bros, and Super Quest Bros RPG. Another user suggests a Super Smash JRPG with “a bunch of different characters with different classes” like the original Final Fantasy games.
“Kirby should be a warlock, not a blue mage,” another user replies, and I can’t help but agree. It would be great to get a Kirby game like that, as well as the potential for characters like Isaac from Golden Sun or Olimar with his Pikmin.
“I feel like a Mario and Zelda RPG would be a very well-received game,” one user replies. “But I don’t know why Nintendo hasn’t done one yet.” Another adds, “They did a Rabbids RPG, so I don’t see why not.” It’s true that Nintendo tends to avoid crossovers to help maintain the uniqueness of each world, as Shigeru Miyamoto explained. But perhaps the success of the Mario and Rabbids games will lead to a change of heart.
For now, we’ll just have to keep dreaming and speculating, but hopefully Nintendo decides to give us something like this in the future.
