Minecraft's 1.19 Wild Update: Exploring the Deep Dark Biome and Ancient Cities

Are you curious about finding a Minecraft Ancient City? The recently introduced Deep Dark biome in the 1.19 Wild Update offers a challenging but rewarding adventure, as it houses exclusive items like the Swift Sneak books. Additionally, Ancient Cities provide a great opportunity to obtain Sculk blocks, which contribute to the eerie ambiance of this biome.

Traversing the Deep Dark biome is perilous, with its absence of natural light and the presence of the Minecraft Warden lurking in the underground darkness. If you're up for the challenge and prepared to face the creepiest of Minecraft mobs, here's a guide on how to find Ancient Cities in Minecraft and the valuable loot you can expect to discover.

Locating the Deep Dark Biome in Minecraft

The Deep Dark biome was introduced in the 1.19 Wild Update and is primarily found below the Overworld, particularly beneath mountains. While it isn't possible to pinpoint the exact location of a Deep Dark Biome in-game, the update's Patch Notes mention that they generate more frequently under mountain biomes.

If you're determined to find one through in-game exploration, we recommend searching around Y level -52 and remaining vigilant for Warden spawns. It's also advisable to bring Night Vision potions to navigate through the darkness and avoid activating Sculk blocks, which can attract the Warden to your vicinity. Utilize crouching and wool to prevent the activation of Sculk blocks, and you can even use wool as scaffolding or carpet to safely traverse Ancient Cities. If you're swift enough, you can even use wool to create carpeting or flooring for your newly constructed houses.

Discovering Ancient Cities in Minecraft

Ancient Cities are colossal caverns composed entirely of Deepslate, an exclusive material found only in the Deep Dark biome. These cities are illuminated by soul lanterns and feature a non-functional portal made of reinforced Deepslate as their centerpiece. Although you won't stumble upon one naturally in-game, the 1.19 Wild Update's Patch Notes assure that "these ancient constructs do generate naturally in the Deep Dark," providing a good chance of locating one using the aforementioned method.

Inside a Minecraft Ancient City, you can expect to find:

  • Chests containing various items:
    • Swift Sneak books: Increase movement speed while sneaking, allowing you to navigate between lanterns undetected by Sculk Shriekers.
    • Echo shards: Used to craft the Recovery Compass, aiding in the discovery of nearby Ancient Cities and hidden treasure chests.
    • Music disc shards: Utilized to craft a haunting music disc that can be played in a jukebox or disc plinth, introducing melody to this otherwise silent biome.

Each Ancient City may generate differently but follows a consistent layout and contains the same assortment of loot. The chances of finding specific items in their respective chests range from 35.9% for a Potion of Regeneration to 1.2% for a Silence Armor Trim Smithing Template.

While exploring the Deep Dark, exercise caution to avoid activating Sculk Shriekers, which will summon the formidable Warden. Thankfully, wool can be used to evade Sculk blocks, and you can utilize scaffolding and carpeting to safely traverse the Ancient City.

Ensure you bring a sufficient supply of Night Vision potions to counter the extreme darkness of the Deep Dark. Getting lost and alone in this abyss is an experience best avoided, so prioritize clear visibility during your expedition.
