Fallout 76's Magical Floating Buildings
Fallout 76 is full of surprises, and one of the biggest is the way that you can basically remove the stairs from buildings. Bethesda’s latest multiplayer game is also home to some very interesting theories, as some players attempt to explain how you can take away certain parts of a building in the post-apocalyptic game, while others offer up their own suggestions as to how that might work.
One player makes the comparison to Kerbal Space Program, a space flight simulator with a very similar use of struts. Others simply say “it just works,” and we’re inclined to agree.
“The building just floats there,” one user agrees. “It’s the best.” Another quotes “It just works,” a phrase that you might recognise from Apple’s advertising for the original iPhone.
The player then goes on to explain how the concept works in the game’s engine, that there is no gravity for static objects, so it doesn’t matter if something hovers in the air. It’s a simple, but effective explanation.
It’s not just Fallout 76 that has this kind of thing, though. Other survival games have similar systems in place. A lot of people mention Minecraft, which allows you to build things in such a way that they can float in the air. One user says that Fortnite also has this kind of functionality, which is more limited than Fallout 76, but still there.
“Building in survival games generally just means making sure the structure doesn’t fall down,” one says, “so it’s nice to have a game that lets you have a bit of fun with it.” Another user replies that this isn’t always the case, and warns about the frustrations of building in other survival games where a small mistake can lead to hours of work collapsing.
Another user mentions a load-bearing bridge as an additional feature in the game. “Fallout 76 is literally building a bridge in real life right now,” they reply to another user who compares their wooden structure to the Forth Bridge.
