16 Horizon “Plans” in the Works: Are They Going Overboard?
While there are potentially plenty of Horizon plans in development, with ten Horizon games potentially in the works alongside a Horizon TV show, Horizon animated series, Horizon comic books, and even Horizon board games, the question must be, who actually wants all of this? A lot of it sounds cool, but with the FPS game Horizon 3 still fresh, and Horizon VR 2 on the horizon, it seems like Sony is pushing the series too hard.
We know that Horizon 3 is probably in the works, which is fine, and it would be great to see a Horizon multiplayer and Horizon MMO. But the suggestion of a Horizon horror game, Horizon spin-off, Horizon sequel, and Horizon remake is too much. Horizon has sold well, but it’s nowhere near a personal best for Sony, and certainly not up there with other games like The Last of Us and Elden Ring, both of which are considered among the finest games of all time.
Perhaps the reason Sony is investing so heavily in Horizon is because Guerrilla is willing to cooperate. While Naughty Dog is known for its perfectionism, and would have a couple of projects at most, Guerrilla is more interested in continuing to make video games rather than sticking to a specific vision. Horizon is likely a step below games like The Last of Us and God of War in terms of quality and vision, but perhaps it’s good enough for Guerrilla to keep making sequels.
Perhaps Horizon fans would also like it if Guerrilla stuck to one or two projects at a time rather than flooding the horizon with plans. Even I, an occasional Horizon fan, might struggle to keep up with so many projects, and I’m sure the rest of the world will too.
With Horizon games taking so long to develop, we’re looking at a potential release for Horizon 3 in 2027 or later. That’s a long time to wait for another game, especially when trying to develop multiple games simultaneously. Horizon has potential, but it’s played it safe and not taken enough risks over the years. Perhaps this is the right move, but it’s still overwhelming.
Making 16 things at once? Horizon may have fans, but that’s too much. Make the TV show, the third game, and the multiplayer game, and that seems like a lot already.
