OpenMW 0.48.0 release notes
The latest OpenMW update overhauls Morrowind’s visuals with a new post-processing shader framework, while also introducing a new Lua scripting API for modders, meaning the 21-year-old RPG can look even better than ever. Combined with improvements to engine bugs, as well as screenshot capturing and ally reactions to crimes, the engine overhaul proves quite the update for the classic Bethesda RPG game.
“The main focus of this release is visual fidelity and game logic,” the team writes. “We believe these features greatly enhance the experience for everyone, whether you’re a longtime veteran or just starting out.”
OpenMW 0.48.0 introduces a revamped post-processing system, alongside new Lua scripting hooks for modders, allowing them to improve the game’s graphics from within the engine itself.
The team also addresses various engine bugs, such as birthsign abilities and AI behaviour. On the modding side, not only are recent releases like PxR: Cliff Racers Begone still coming thick and fast, but OpenMW continues to thrive with a huge variety of different UI and gameplay overhauls.
However, OpenMW still lacks support for the Morrowind Script Extender (MWSE), which greatly limits the potential of many of these mods. While OpenMW will continue to improve Morrowind’s visuals and gameplay, the modding scene will continue to thrive, and OpenMW will remain a distant second to the classic Morrowind with SE, and Morrowind with MWSE, for the foreseeable future.
