Outer Wilds

Outer Wilds, the outer space adventure from Tallgrass, released at a bad time, but that hasn't stopped players from hailing it as one of the greatest achievements in gaming. Dozens of players share their experiences playing the adventure across Reddit and Discord, and the general consensus is that "Outer Wilds" is a top 5 all-time favorite, and a compact package of joy. Some even go so far as to call it the greatest game of all time.

"Outer Wilds" is a critical darling, but its release date (like "Titanfall 2") seems to have been its downfall, as it was released alongside other big space games like "Anthem" and "Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order." Despite its timing, players say you should still try "Outer Wilds" if you're interested in space or physics, and that you shouldn't miss out on a game that has "the best puzzles in any game, bar none."

"Outer Wilds" is also, according to players, a game that you should play blind. "Outer Wilds" is, at its core, an Open-world game that you can explore in your spaceship. As you fly around, you'll encounter fragments of a crashed science station, and through exploration and discovery, learn more about the scientists and their research.

"You can't say anything about Outer Wilds without mentioning the puzzles," one player says, "but even if you don't like puzzles, you should still try it." Many players describe the game as a simulation to explore, with no UI prompts or missions, just questions to answer through exploration.

"There's nothing else like it," another player says. "They hit all the right notes. It's not exactly replayable, but you're not missing out on anything by not playing it twice."

Some players report not initially getting into the game, but becoming more immersed after giving it another chance. "I wouldn't say I didn't get into it," another player responds, "I was excited but also really confused," adding that they became excited as they uncovered more in the game.

Players also describe the game's accurate space simulation as challenging at first, but with practice, they were able to improve. "You can't just fly through space like in other games," one player says. "It requires a lot of time to master."

The comparisons to "Titanfall 2" are both funny and frustrating, as many players "wish they'd learned from the mistakes with Titanfall 2." Respawn's successful history, which may have led to the EA buyout rumors, may have also given them leeway with "Anthem."

"What if EA knew about the sales and purposely released these games at bad times?" one user asks. Another responds, speculating that EA may have bought Respawn for cheaper due to low sales.

Despite the game's poor timing, "Outer Wilds" still has a dedicated following, and the game's critical acclaim helped it stand out. If you're interested in trying "Outer Wilds," you can get it for $19.99, the same price it was when it first released. However, you might be better off waiting until Outer Wilds 2 comes out, as the developers have already stated that they plan to make a sequel.
