Pokemon Scarlet & Violet's New Tea-Themed Pokemon Disappoint Fans

Nintendo’s new Pokemon are based around tea, and the Pokemon Scarlet & Violet DLC’s new critters appear in the anime game‘s third episode. While the team at Game Freak has been hard at work creating the many Pokemon in the base game, the quality of the gameplay and visuals has been called into question. While the critters’ designs continue the team’s trend of producing unique, interesting Pokemon, they are a letdown compared to the base game’s Pokemon, new and old.

Pokemon fans will likely remember the negativity surrounding the initial announcement of Pokemon Scarlet & Violet. Poor gameplay and unappealing visuals put a lot of players off, and the DLC has not yet managed to change that. However, the base game’s designs are still highly praised, and fans have high hopes for future additions.

The new Pokemon in the Teal Mask DLC are considerably less exciting than the base game’s Pokemon. Nintendo showed off a number of new Pokemon, including Dipplin, a form of Applin based on water apples, and Raikou’s new form, Roaming Bolt.

“The new Pokemon for the upcoming DLC have been revealed and I’m really disappointed,” one Redditor comments. “They’re just plain weird and I’m not sure they add anything to the game.” Another adds, “I’m actually a little bit disappointed in these. I don’t think they add anything to the game and I’m just worried that we’ll get more of these in the future.”

Others are even more critical of the designs, calling them “ugly” and poorly put together. “The Roaming Bolt form is ugly and poorly designed,” one fan states. Another adds, “I think I’m more disappointed since I was actually excited to see the new Pokemon,” alongside a sad anime face.

“I was really looking forward to the new Pokemon and I’m really disappointed with everything,” another adds. “Everything is weird and unnecessary.” Some are more positive about the Pokemon, but overall, most of the community shares the disappointment of these designs.

Dipplin, a new form of Applin, is also criticized for its strange design. “I prefer Dipplin’s first form over its final form,” one user comments. “The hair is weird, and it looks like it’s wearing a dress.” Another adds, “I’m not a fan of this. I wish it was more like a watermelon.”

The Poltchageist is a Polteageist form based on Japanese tea ceremonies. The concept is interesting, but the actual design is lackluster. “I’m disappointed with the Poltchageist,” one Redditor shares. Another explains, “I was expecting something like a tea ceremony dress, but it’s just a weird rag.”

The cover stars of the Teal Mask DLC are Munkidori, Okidogi, and Fezandipiti. While the animations are cute and the designs are original, they still receive negative feedback. “Munkidori and Okidogi are so cute,” one comments. “But I’m not really a fan of their designs. I don’t know, it’s just… not what I expected.”

The negativity around the new Pokemon designs is clearly widespread, and it is unlikely to improve unless the gameplay and visuals are made more appealing. The anime game is still in its early stages, so there is still plenty of room for further announcements to impress. For now, however, the community is concerned that the designs will only continue to worsen.
