The Pokemon TCG 151 Expansion: A Blast from the Past
The upcoming Pokemon TCG 151 expansion is already generating a lot of hype, with the last expansion to receive this level of excitement being 2019’s Hidden Fates. The Evolutions set, released even earlier, had a lasting impact due to its nostalgic reprints of base set cards, but it was over-printed, making it easy to find even years after its release. It’s a different story this time around, however, as pre-orders for 151 have already sold out on the Pokemon Center website.
151 will feature reimagined versions of the original Pokemon in the Paldea region, along with ex, ultra rare, and special illustration cards. Pre-orders began on the Pokemon Center website on June 3, and they’ve already sold out.
GameStop and Best Buy will also have their own promo cards for the expansion. However, it’s unclear if these will be available for separate purchase or if they’ll be exclusive to the participating retailers.
eBay listings for the expansion are already appearing, but at massively overpriced rates. The set is set to release on September 1, so there’s still time to grab some sealed product if you’re desperate to get your hands on it. Just don’t pay a premium from online resellers.
Despite some initial concerns, it appears that Pokemon is once again riding the nostalgia wave with this release. It’s set to be a big hit, and there’ll likely be plenty of sealed product available.
The author of the original article shares their concerns about the types of people drawn to this expansion and the impact on the market, especially given its potential for short-term profits. Still, they emphasize the importance of remaining “normal” about the release, as it’s ultimately a card game for children.
“Who’s going to buy all the sealed product in the future if there’s nothing left for kids to discover on store shelves?” the author asks.
