Some Legendary Pokemon Trios

It’s no exaggeration to say that some of the best things come in threes. Just look at Destiny’s Child, Saved by the Bell’s freshman class, and the original Pokemon Red and Blue roster if you need some proof. Naturally, the rare level of power associated with some trios in the RPG game is no coincidence, and it leads us to today’s discussion: which Pokemon Legendary trios are best in the game?

Legendary Pokemon make up some of the strongest creatures in the game. Some regions only have one Legendary, but a few lucky regions can boast an entire Legendary roster because, well, some of the best things come in threes. So what does this mean for competitive battling? Well, some trios will just be made up of Pokemon banned from competitive battling for being too powerful, but some are better than others. That’s where we come in. This list will look at the trios recognized either officially by Pokemon or the general Pokemon community, and we’ll stack them against each other to find out which triangle stands the tallest.

The Regis and the Lake Guardians

The first three Regis are practically the weakest of the Regi bunch, when looking at both raw power and competitive viability. All boast a pure Psychic-typing and similar movepools. The individual competitive viabilities of the Lake Guardians vary significantly. If you factored popularity, the Legendary beasts might be surprisingly low on this list, considering how much attention different Pokemon media have given them. Nevertheless, this trio found success in Gen 8 competitions. Plus, where would you be without Lugia Key Art?

The Swords of Justice

The Swords of Justice are technically a quartet with Keldeo, but Keldeo is generally regarded as the pseudo-baby brother of the other three members: Terrakion, Cobalion, and Virizion. Since they appear as a group on the box art of Pokemon Black, White, Black 2, and White 2, this once-trio has been a persistent competitive presence for quite a while now, rivalled only by our next entry.

The Creation Trio

The first box art Legendary trio on the list, the Creation trio is probably the one that’s closest to having all three members be equal in strength. Having very similar typing and movepools (plus two signature moves), the three Legendary titans of Sinnoh often appear together in competitive battle. However, none of them ever dominated the metagame to the extent that the Tao trio did, for example.

The Tao Trio

The Tao trio works similarly to the Crown Tundra’s main trio of Glastrier, Spectrier, and Calyrex, but they differ in that Reshiram, Zekrom, and Kyurem can all kick tons of butt on their own. In some of the earliest examples of legendary Pokemon having different base stats, Zekrom and Reshiram have higher Attack stats, Kyurem has greater HP, and Kyurem’s defense is higher, but only between each other. In this way, the Tao trio members are complementary instead of equal.

With Necrozma having three different powerful alternate formes to its name, it’s hard for its trio not to earn one of the higher spots of this list off that alone. That’s not to say there aren’t some more successful trio combos, however. Just take a look at the following video game list.

The Kalos Legendaries: Zacian, Zamazenta, and Eternatus

Headlined the climax of the Sword and Shield base games, Zacian, Zamazenta, and Eternatus were a force to be reckoned with. So much so that they’re permanently banned from regular competitive play. Don’t worry, though, they’re still incredibly powerful.

Zacian and Zamazenta in particular are especially fearsome, with their Z-Moves Oblivious Command and Bloom Doom turning them into pseudo-Alolan Raichus with 311 and 297 attack stats, respectively. Eternatus combines the power of grass, dragon, and steel-type moves, which are some of the best in the series

Even the Pokemon TCG has its own Legends, albeit with different names and artwork. Collectively known as Legendary Treasures, the focal Pokemon of these expansions are Raikou, Entei, and Suicune.
