Resident Evil: Death Island
Resident Evil: Death Island trailer reveals that the characters are not aging at the same rate, and that Capcom is using the film to establish Jill’s agelessness. The full cast of Resident Evil heroes is brought together for the first time ever for a unique, stylish, and fun take on the zombie apocalypse. The film brings the style of the film series to the character designs of the recent remakes, and the characters are in their late 30s or early 40s.
Some of the characters, however, do not appear to be aging – despite being in the same age bracket. Resident Evil 2’s Claire and Rebecca, and Resident Evil 5’s Jill all appear untouched by time, while Chris and Leon have aged significantly. The official Resident Evil Portal Twitter account confirms that Jill’s T-Virus infection has slowed her aging. Claire and Rebecca also do not seem to be aging, and it is speculated that their exposure to the virus explains this.
Fans have dubbed this phenomenon the “Young and Hot Forever Virus” to criticize the treatment of women in the media. Though Resident Evil has always featured a playable female protagonist, it is often Jill who leads the charge, and her turns as the main character have always kept her youthful despite the events of the games.
Capcom has officially confirmed that Jill’s lack of aging is intentional and part of the plot – though it does not comment on Claire and Rebecca’s lack of aging.
“Jill’s infection has slowed her aging,” the account says, “but Claire and Rebecca also do not seem to be aging. The story begins with the three of them in their 40s but…”
Death Island sets up future stories for Jill, and the movie deals with the fallout of Resident Evil 5. Capcom is using Death Island to establish Jill’s agelessness and hints at more of her story to come.
The mention of the Blu-ray slip cover, however, suggests her youthfulness may be for marketing purposes. The article concludes by stating that the topic is currently trending.
