2023: A Year of Gaming Delights
2023 is shaping up to be one of the best years for gaming with big releases and acclaimed indies, but it’s also filled with so many highly praised games that you’ll never be able to play them all. Whether you’re trying to play as many games as possible in a year or want to finish everything you own, it’s impossible to keep up with everything happening in the gaming world.
With so many games coming out, it’s hard to play everything, whether you’re working as a game journalist or just trying to balance gaming as a hobby with other things you have going on in your life. I mention both my job as a game journalist and spending hours on games like Baldur’s Gate 3 and Tears of the Kingdom, but even if you’re not trying to play them all, it’s nearly impossible to finish every game in 2023 because of their length.
Even shorter games like Pikmin 4 and Dead Space feel long, and the upcoming Starfield adds to the overwhelming amount of games coming out in the year. Even if you play games on the side while working on other hobbies, like movies, you’ll still feel like you’re missing out.
I watch a lot of movies, but I’ve been busy playing games this year, too. I think I’ve watched two movies in their entirety this year, but I haven’t played a ton of games, despite trying to balance both. Playing games has taken up a lot of my free time that I used to use for things like watching movies. I’m sure a lot of people can relate to this.
In 2020, I played numerous games but still felt like I was missing out on a ton of games, whether that was indie games or big releases, and my job as a game journalist just made it worse. I still tried to balance my time between games and other hobbies, like movies and reading, but it’s always felt like I’ve been playing catch-up.
It’s worth mentioning that in 2020, I also worked a lot, which meant that I had less free time than I did in 2018, but even so, I still felt like I was missing out on so much. If I was trying to play as many games as possible in a year, I would never be able to finish everything I own, but because I don’t watch a lot of movies, I’ve been able to finish everything I own, with the exception of games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Baldur’s Gate 3.
In 2020, I was excited to play Cyberpunk 2077, but I didn’t have high expectations because of how long the game was taking to release, and I was disappointed by how long it took to complete. I also didn’t have a lot of free time in 2020, so I was trying to play games that I could finish quickly, which is another reason why I didn’t play a lot of games that year.
In 2023, my situation hasn’t changed, and I still feel overwhelmed by the amount of games coming out. As I mentioned, I’m still trying to balance gaming as a hobby and work as a game journalist, which is difficult. It’s much easier for me to catch up on movies because of their shorter duration, but games still feel like they take forever to finish.
Keeping up with everything happening in the gaming world feels impossible because there’s always something new to play, and it’s hard to balance everything in your life, especially if you’re working. I’ll probably never be able to play everything, and I’m okay with that, but I love gaming too much to give it up entirely.
