A Cyberpunk 2077 overhaul is planned for the RPG game's upcoming expansion, Phantom of Liberty, with developer CD Projekt Red aiming to address core issues that have prevented the game from reaching its true potential. Speaking at CD Projekt Red’s Day2LevelUp gaming conference, quests designer Despoina Anetaki and creative director Pawel Sasko emphasized the major overhauls coming to Cyberpunk 2077, including changes to gameplay, mechanics, and enemy AI. The skill tree and gear progression systems will be completely rebuilt, providing more variety and substance. CD Projekt Red's goal is to create a game that reflects the Cyberpunk world, blending every aspect naturally into the world and gameplay.

Cyberpunk 2077 Expansion: Phantom of Liberty

The upcoming expansion for Cyberpunk 2077, Phantom of Liberty, will introduce major overhauls to the game's systems. CD Projekt Red is rebuilding the enemy AI, particularly that of law enforcement, with multiple alert levels and a greater variety of units and tactics. The perk and skill tree systems are also being completely rebuilt, offering more substance and variety. The gear progression and loot system will undergo substantial changes, including a new difficulty curve and revamped loot drops and enemy archetypes.

The current skill trees in Cyberpunk 2077 offer little variety or impact on gameplay. Most perks and skills provide minor stat boosts and bonuses, but the new agility perk tree shown in the demo appears to offer a linear selection of small stat boosts, similar to traditional RPG games. The gear economy and upgrade system are also disappointing, with an abundance of identical, level-adjusted gear. CD Projekt Red aims to address these issues and provide a more rewarding and diverse gameplay experience.

CD Projekt Red's Ambitions

CD Projekt Red's ambition is to make Cyberpunk 2077 an RPG with an emphasis on story. The overhauls planned for the upcoming expansion show their commitment to improving the core gameplay and mechanics of the game. It's unclear whether these changes will be part of a free update or locked behind a paywall, but they are certainly a promising sign that CD Projekt Red is working towards their goal.
