Remaking or Remastering Games: A Question of Modernisation
What games do you think are worthy of a remake or remaster in order to modernise their graphics, gameplay, and controls? It’s no secret that some of our favourite games from the past may not hold up to modern standards, but what if the games themselves could be fixed too?
Many of us at PC Game Spotlight remember our first taste of an immersive, fantastical world like that of The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind. Having never experienced anything like it, the game and its sequels in the series were everything we wanted from the RPG genre, and subsequent games in the series have failed to match that. So, would a remake of the game be able to capture the magic of the past, or would it just be a case of ruining something that isn’t broken?
“Morrowind, in my opinion, has not aged well gameplay-wise,” one user writes. “But the lore, the story, and the atmosphere of the game are all standout in The Elder Scrolls series.” Other users mention Oblivion, the predecessor to Skyrim, and how it fell short in terms of its setting, with some going as far to say that it lacked most of the interesting locations and lore mentioned in in-game books.
The combat system in Morrowind is often criticised for relying too heavily on random number generation (RNG), and many suggest an overhaul if it were to happen. Many also mention that there are already modding projects like Skywind and Skyblivion, which aim to remake Morrowind and Oblivion in the Skyrim engine.
On the other side, there is a sizeable chunk of users who express concern that a remake would ruin the unique aspects of Morrowind, and are generally skeptical of Bethesda’s ability to handle it properly. The majority of users, however, seem to be happy with remasters over remakes, as they feel the modding communities have already made significant improvements.
