Screenshots highlight the impact of trees in games

We all know that trees make a big difference to the look of any game. So much so that even a screenshot comparison between an image with and without trees can highlight just how much they enhance the game’s atmosphere.

One user posts two images of their own game, both of which show it at the same point in the game, but with one image containing trees, and the other not. The first image, without trees, shows a large, open field. However, the second, with trees, shows the same field with trees dotted around it, creating a different atmosphere.

“So I just discovered the difference trees make,” the user posts. Many other users express interest in the game and offer support, with one suggesting using money to buy military units and win in civilization games. Another user mentions the possibility of optimising the game’s real-time shadows for better performance.

“I prefer the open field,” some say. “It gives a sense of vastness.” Others respond with, “Add patches of trees for contrast while maintaining the open feeling.” Other users chime in with their own suggestions and opinions.

“The game mechanics are tied to different areas,” the developer responds. “Forest for concealment, roads for travel range, etc.” They add that they like the added depth and feeling of the second image, although others prefer the simplicity of the first.

“The only difference between the images is the addition of trees,” the developer confirms. Some users express excitement for the game’s release and compliment the visuals. One humorous comment points out that the top image is a picture, and the bottom one is a video.

The conversation then expands to include real-world examples, such as fields and forests. Some users suggest grouping tree types and creating clearings to give a more realistic distribution. Overall, opinions are divided on the inclusion of trees, with some preferring the open field and others appreciating the depth and detail added by the trees.
