What is The Witcher 3 Thou Shalt Not Pass side quest? Upon reaching Velen for the first time, players will encounter an administrative and physical roadblock. The Pontar, which separates Velen and Novigrad, has only a few bridges that allow the free flow of people and goods between the kingdoms. This control also extends to Geralt of Rivia, the world's most famous mutant monster hunter.

As a result, commuters in The Witcher 3 are fortunate to obtain any form of pass that grants them the right to cross. Movement across the vast open-world game is heavily regulated, with guarded bridges that only permit passage to those with a pass. Fortunately, there is one location where players can acquire a pass, as well as a lesser-known method of purchasing passage across the river.

The Witcher 3: How to Acquire a Pass

The easiest way to cross the Pontar is at the Pontar River Pass and the Border Post Pass checkpoints near the Border Post Fast Travel point. To obtain the pass, players must speak to the guards at these locations.

If players are feeling adventurous, they can swim across the river or use Fast Travel instead of using the bridges. However, a pass is still required. Completing the quest Family Matters for the Bloody Baron will reward players with a pass.

If players have not completed the quest, the Redanian Captain will have a Witcher contract titled Woodland Beast. This contract becomes available after completing the main quests Filthy Little Secret and Ifrit’s Flame, both located in the Velen area. Once players defeat the beast in this quest, they will receive the pass they need at the Woodland Beast Signpost. The Captain asks players to describe the pass, as he is unable to see. Here is the description he is looking for:

  • Whatever consequences may come, players will end up with a pass. However, this method should not be used if players want to obtain the pass honestly, as the Witcher 3 Woodland Beast contract offers its own rewards.

That's all players need to know to acquire a pass in The Witcher 3: Thou Shalt Not Pass side quest. If players are in a hurry and do not wish to waste time speaking to the guards, the Shady Merchant at the Border Post can provide assistance, for a fee. These counterfeit papers are as good as the real ones, allowing players to cross the Pontar or fast-travel over it without impediment.
