The Daemon of Change: Shadows of Change DLC

The Total War: Warhammer 3 DLC Shadows of Change introduces a campaign mechanic so game-changing that developer Creative Assembly says it’s “like nothing you’ve ever seen in a Total War game,” and that it “changes everything about the way you play Total War: Warhammer.” That’s a pretty big statement, especially considering the scope of Total War games like Warhammer 3 and its predecessor Warhammer 2.

The Changeling and Diplomacy

The Total War: Warhammer 3 campaign DLC is called Shadows of Change, and it introduces The Changeling, “a shapeshifting daemon dedicated to the pursuit of chaos and anarchy.” The Changeling’s presence on the campaign map will affect the diplomacy of your factions, as well as forcing you to tactically adapt your cities and armies to keep your settlements safe.

As you conquer settlements in Warhammer 3, The Changeling will insert a cult to influence diplomacy. If that cult remains untouched for some time, it can start to spread corruption to nearby settlements, with negative effects such as lowering public order or increasing the costs of recruitment. However, if you choose to destroy the cult, The Changeling will self-destruct the building, with the same negative effects on your city.

You can check out The Changeling’s campaign mechanics in the Shadows of Change trailer below:

The Changeling's Schemes and Abilities

With The Changeling’s unique mechanics, you’ll also have to complete his “Schemes” on the campaign map to push the DLC’s story forward. These Schemes will lead to quest battles with special rewards, but they’ll also impact battles, with The Changeling using wildcard spells and abilities unique to him.

If you’re playing as The Changeling, you’ll be able to shapeshift into your allies or defeated enemies, adopting their stats and abilities. The Total War: Warhammer 3 Shadows of Change DLC also introduces the Blue Scribes, a pair of daemons that “share a single consciousness and a burning desire to bring knowledge to all.” The Blue Scribes will ride a flying disc and cast spells, with a “library” of random spells available to them. They’ll gain power when spells are cast nearby, which will then make them stronger in battle.

New Legendary Lords and Factions

Shadows of Change also introduces new legendary lords and factions to Kislev and Cathay. To experience the full DLC, you’ll need to play all three factions. Shadows of Change is priced at $25 and will launch on August 31. If you pre-order now, you’ll get a launch discount of $22.50.

With the Total War: Warhammer 3 DLC, you’ll have plenty of new fantasy races to play with, and a brand new story campaign to experience. The Daemon of Change sounds like he could be a game-changer, so be sure to check out the Total War: Warhammer 3 launch time and find out when you can get started in one of the best strategy games of the year.
