Looking for the weirdest games?
We’re all for weird. After all, what’s more interesting than something that defies explanation? We’re talking about those experiences that leave us with more questions than answers, or those titles that lead us on an unexpected journey.
The coolest, Weirdest games span all genres, from platformers and point-and-clickers, to first-person shooters. The likes of The Sims and Antichamber are name-dropped, alongside some rarer titles like Beautiful Katamari. So, if you’re looking for the most unusual experience possible, these are the weirdest games you can play right now.
Here are the weirdest games on PC:
Inscryption
“Inscryption is a totally normal game, right?” asks one Reddit user. “Then you get to the second area and you’re like, ‘Oh, this is a little weird,’ and by the third area you’re like, ‘wait, am I on drugs?’.” Inscryption is an atmospheric exploration game with a bizarre sense of strangeness to it, and that’s exactly what some players love about it.
“I’m not sure if it’s just me, but that game gives me some kind of drug-like feeling,” another comment reads. “I’ve been looking for games like that for a long time.” If you’re looking for something that feels a little bit Trippy, Inscryption is a game that you can play right now, especially when played high. Just make sure you’re sitting down when you play it.
Earthbound
It’s hard to imagine a list of weird games without Earthbound, as it’s revered as one of the most bizarre and surreal JRPGs of all time. The game has such a unique sense of humour, memorable characters and enemies, and a story that takes players to unexpected places.
One player explains, “The story is weird, the gameplay is weird, the setting is weird. It’s a weird game.” Another writes, “Earthbound is just so out there, and so unique in so many different ways. It was a game that, for me, just did everything right.”
Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem
Another cult classic, Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem puts players in the shoes of Alexandra Roivas as she investigates the mysterious deaths of her entire family. While the game is praised for its inventive and challenging combat, it’s the immersion and psychological horror that stick out, with players experiencing unsettling hallucinations, and a crumbling sense of reality.
“Sanity’s Requiem is a game that messes with your mind in a very psychological way,” one user explains. “While the game is more than willing to go full-on horror, it’s the little unsettling moments that it excels at,” another writes.
Cruelty Squad
Described as “a game that doesn’t want you to play it,” Cruelty Squad is a retro-inspired shooter that’s so difficult, it’s almost frustrating, with players dying within seconds of starting the game. If you can overcome the challenge, however, you’ll find a psychedelic experience that’s worth waiting for.
“It’s a nightmare,” one player writes. “You’ll die within seconds of starting the game, but then… you’ll start seeing things. Unsettling things.” Another adds, “The art direction, the sound effects, the atmosphere, the gameplay… it’s all good.”
Hypnospace Outlaw
If you’re looking for a trippy experience, then Hypnospace Outlaw is the game for you. The retro-inspired adventure game takes players on a trip down the internet’s memory lane, with a story focused on an online virtual world called Hypnospace.
“Hypnospace Outlaw is just a trippy, weird game and I love it,” one player explains. “It’s an adventure game that is a bit different from your typical point-and-click and I think that’s why I like it,” another writes.
GNOG
GNOG is a charming and challenging puzzle game, but what makes it stand out from other puzzlers is that it’s set inside the mind of a giant monster. The game’s trippy atmosphere is enhanced by the incredible audio design and music, and the colourful, abstract art style.
“GNOG is a puzzle game that is equal parts trippy and challenging,” one user writes. Another adds, “I had a lot of fun with GNOG, it’s a great puzzle game that’s challenging and trippy.”
Tokyo Mirage Sessions # FE
Tokyo Mirage Sessions # FE is weird, but that’s part of its charm. It’s a JRPG with a lot of heart, but the unexpected crossover and departure from fan expectations makes it stand out from other similar games in the genre.
“How could it not be weird? It’s a crossover between Shin Megami Tensei and Fire Emblem,” one player explains. Another adds, “The unexpected crossover is just… I don’t know what to say about it. It’s just weird.”
Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon
Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon is so weird, it almost feels like a parody of 80s action movies. Set in a neon-lit version of 1980s, Blood Dragon is a standalone expansion to Far Cry 3 that puts players in the shoes of Rex Colt, a cyber-commando on a mission to take down an evil scientist.
The game’s over-the-top action, cheesy one-liners, and bizarre sci-fi elements make it one of the weirdest Far Cry games to date, and a cult classic in its own right.
Child of Eden
Child of Eden is trippy, and that’s exactly what makes it so good. Inspired by Rez, the rail-shooter takes players on a trip through the abstract, psychedelic world of Eden, where players are tasked with destroying a sentient computer virus.
With an incredible electronic soundtrack, and gameplay that’s just as psychedelic as the world it takes place in, Child of Eden is a must-play for fans of trippy experiences.
Inside
From the same team that brought us Limbo, Inside is just as weird and just as good.
