Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su: A Surprising Family Connection
Su, a Taiwanese-born American, and Huang, a U.S. citizen of Taiwanese descent, both hail from Tainan, Taiwan, and are closely related, according to a family tree provided by family heritage researcher Wu Jia Jin.
Huang’s fame, or perhaps infamy, has been growing in recent months, mainly due to the success of Nvidia, with the company reaching a $1 trillion valuation. But it seems that his increased fame could be partly down to his own hard work, or perhaps due to the combination of factors.
Previously, it was thought that Huang was distantly related to Su, but the published family tree shows that they are, in fact, quite closely related, and are like cousins. Huang is actually a cousin to Su’s child, with Huang’s grandfather having at least 12 children.
“There are a lot of cousins in the Huang family that aren’t included in the tree,” Wu says in the video. The family tree also does not include Huang’s father, who passed away in 2013, or Su’s mother, who is still alive. The two were born in Taiwan and both moved to the US at a young age.
In English, they could be described as first cousins once removed, or Su could refer to Huang as her second uncle. However, naming relatives in Mandarin Chinese and Taiwanese Hokkien is a lot more complex, and the media reports don’t offer a precise description.
The reports also share the life stories of the CEOs, highlighting their hard work and success. The Chinese language media has amusingly referred to them as “the godfather of AI and …the queen of semiconductors.”
