Titanfall 3 Cancelled and Turned into Apex Legends

Titanfall 3 may have been coming along well before it was cancelled and turned into Apex Legends, according to Respawn developers. Some players express disappointment at the potential loss of the Titanfall 3 reveal and hope for a follow-up. Others argue that even if it is made, it won’t really feel the same without the original developers.

“Titanfall 3 was in development for 10 months before we decided to cancel it and focus on Apex. It was a hard decision but one we felt was necessary to make. It wasn’t built on aging technology,” Respawn engineer Nick Chastain explains in the Respawn livestream. “I know a lot of people want to continue to think that it was coming along real well and we just decided to focus on Apex, but that’s not true.”

Many users express disappointment in the potential loss of a Titanfall 3 reveal, even if they doubt it would live up to the original. Others argue that even if it is made, it won’t feel the same without the original developers, while others are just happy with Apex Legends.

“There is no way that a game by a different team, with a different direction, with different goals and a timeframe of a few years instead of ten months, can ever be Titanfall 3,” one user explains. “And even if it is, it won’t be the same.”

Several Respawn design leads have left the company to pursue their own projects, but users see this as natural rather than a sign of trouble. “I’m not surprised some of them left. It’s a pretty well-known fact that working on a live service game like Apex is an extremely difficult task,” one user points out.

“I don’t think Apex is bad, but it’s a game that has had a lot of challenges,” another Respawn developer admits. “I’m sure a lot of you guys have played Battlefield 1 and enjoyed it. Battlefield 1 was extremely successful and extremely good. I play a lot of Battlefield 1 and a lot of people here play a lot of Battlefield 1. But I also played Battlefield 2042 and I didn’t enjoy that game at all.”

Some users also discuss the impact of the release timing of Titanfall 2 and its competition with other shooters, while others express concerns about the state of Titanfall 2’s multiplayer on Xbox due to hacking issues.

“Titanfall 3 was not actually coming along well,” another Respawn developer clarifies. “We were working on it for about a year, but it was built on technology from Titanfall 2, which was built on technology from Titanfall 1. It was a lot of legacy tech and we just decided that it wasn’t the best thing to spend time on.”

Many users see the decision to cancel Titanfall 3 and focus on Apex Legends as a smart move by Respawn and EA, while others criticize Respawn for the failure of Titanfall 2 and the cancellation of Titanfall 3.

“Apex Legends is built on the Titanfall 2 engine, which is built on Titanfall 1 tech. If Titanfall 3 had been built on the Titanfall 2 engine, it would’ve been built on the Titanfall 1 tech,” another Respawn dev explains. “Apex is built on the most recent technology, and Titanfall 3 would’ve been built on technology from five years ago.”

The claim that Titanfall 3 was cancelled due to “aging tech” is disputed by users, with many pointing out that Titanfall 2 was built on the same engine. One user suggests the idea of developing Titanfall 3 alongside Apex Legends, but others argue that it would be too much work.
