The Loudest Video Game Characters
What screams out your favourite video game characters are saying right now? They can shout some silly stuff, from quote tickers to utter nonsense. It’s what makes the FPS genre so unique – those in-your-face one-liners scream out from your speakers with tank treads on their backs.
The classic Zelda hero, Link, communicates entirely by running around screaming his head off. Sure, he might be on a mission to save Hyrule, or Gaia, or cute, flat islands from destruction, but he never stops to let you know. Perhaps he’s shouting because he can’t talk. Perhaps he’s roaring in ecstasy as one of his martial arts kicks hits its mark hard. Or maybe he’s trying to politely enquire what those baby-like creatures are that are bouncing around the place chucking bombs at him. Whatever he’s thinking it’s guaranteed that he’ll be making some noise while he does it.
Liu Kang’s high-pitched screams during his attacks and taking damage are hilarious, although MK11’s Kung Lao delivers the most grotesque shrieks that make you question whether you’re actually hurting him. That’s the joy of Mortal Kombat – the iconic yelling has set the standard for video game shouting. It also helps that in MK11, slinky snake Sonya is just as psycho as the rest of the roster, making her a close second for this list.
So which characters make the cut with their loud, random, and sometimes very funny dialogue lines? Find out with our list of the ten loudest video game characters – ranked.
The Loudest Video Game Characters are:
The Psychos from Borderlands never shut up during the first game, in fact, you might wish they did if you’re not paying attention. Their randomly generated dialogue lines are ridiculously twisted and hilarious, making for quite the memorable character for the colourful shooter. It’s even funnier if you shoot them in their helmets and make them talk like Jim Carrey in Dumb and Dumber – completely unintelligible. Be prepared to hear a bunch of “Huhs” once you help Tiny Tina blow up the moon in the Borderlands 2 DLC.
What does the wonderfully rounded Kirby communicate through? Giggles and squeals, of course. Adorably tragic in the anime, screaming “Hi!” is one of the most recognisable things about the overly-hungry pink puff. Still, he’s all up in your face, a destructive force that’ll devour all in sight, and doesn’t waste a word while he does it. It’s better than his side special in Smash Ultimate, anyway. Who knew waiting to eat your opponents could be so stressful?
Lanky Kong is added to this list to show that size doesn’t matter when it comes to embarrassing dialogue. Sure, Lanky looks like he’d be more capable of keeping his cool than Krellan Craine, but his unnecessary shouts betray that. The most egregious offence of course being the repeated line “I can fix it!” which begins on Donkey Kong 64’s Creepy Island, after Lanky showers some love and care on a Mini Monkey, only for it to be killed when the platform falls with it. The final straw though is the self-proclaimed “effective… but marginally unreliable” electric guitar after he gets the MMKB extra life in Hideout Helm. Nobody deserves the Lanky treatment more than the egregious Chunky Kong though.
Imagine how annoying Raiden would be if he wasn’t a well-known character? Shouting “BANZAI! ENDURE! KILL!” in Mortal Kombat is a move that you have to do a few times in most titles, it’s par for the course. Yet, the wordless nature of his attack animations in the game make him an absolute delight. His distorted voice is iconic and delivered perfectly. Anybody who doesn’t finish a round with a victory pipe deserves to be stabbed, those that don’t say “Unliiiimit–ed” in their best Raiden voice are posers.
Ladida Ladi da ladida! The Dragonborn is a hero (from) Skyrim, and with every word shouted, shouts out how badass they (you) are. You can still hear the humble hero in their words, but when you’re sending Frostwings back to hell or shouting somebody off a cliff, you know your moment is well-deserved. Dragons know better than to fight back too, so that’s it!
