Budget PC gamers debate the importance of graphics and framerates

This article is inspired by a recent Reddit thread that looked at the struggle of low graphics and low framerates on PC. Some argue that, while others say they appreciate the charm of older games with lower graphics and faster framerates. We’ve all been there, whether it be due to a budget setup or simply because we prefer balanced graphics and framerate.

Some of you might argue that higher framerates trump any level of graphics, others may say that you can’t go back to 30fps, and others still might say that consoles and their monitors still offer the best visuals. Here are some of the best responses to the Reddit thread about low graphics and low framerates on PC.

Many of you share your experiences of playing games with low graphics settings and low framerates. Some of you mention downloading pirated versions of games before they were officially released on PC, while others discuss specific game genres that benefit from higher framerates.

“Tomb Raider I, II, and III were all great games to play on PC with low graphics settings and 30fps,” says one user. “The gameplay was so good that it didn’t matter that the graphics were a bit dated.”

“I can’t go back to 30fps,” says another. “I don’t know what it is, but with a 144Hz monitor, it feels so smooth.”

“I’m a console gamer and I can’t play at anything lower than 30fps,” says another user. “I know it’s a personal thing but I find it jarring when it’s not consistent.”

“I’m quite happy with 30fps at 1080p,” says another. “As long as it’s a solid 60fps at 1080p, I’d prefer better graphics.”

Other users highlight the portability of PC gaming, even with lower graphics and framerates. “I really appreciate being able to game on the go with my laptop,” says one. “I don’t want to be limited by a TV or a console.”

There’s also a debate about the importance of framerate versus graphics in single-player and multiplayer games. “I always prioritize graphics over framerate in multiplayer games,” says one. “I feel like it’s more important to have the best graphics so that my teammates can see what’s going on.”

While another says, “I always prioritize framerate in single-player games. I don’t want to spend all my time struggling to play the game, I’d rather have lower graphics for a smooth experience.”

A few users joke about their preference for high refresh rates and the difference it makes. “I have a 144Hz monitor and I can’t play games at anything slower than 144fps,” says one. Another replies, “I’m convinced that some people use 144Hz as an excuse to play even more games.”

Another user mentions the availability of features like FSR (FidelityFX Super Resolution) to improve performance. “I can play Kingdom Hearts 3 at pretty high settings at about 50fps, but with FSR turned on I can boost the settings even more,” they say.
